#ad Prices come from Amazon and change. How this site is funded. Scores are our own published rubric, not a lab test — see how we pick.

A fixed run holding chickens turns to bare earth, then to mud, then to a place you do not want to walk. A mobile coop sidesteps the whole problem: move it a few feet every few days and the grass behind it recovers while the birds get fresh forage. University of Minnesota Extension's mobile poultry hut work is the clearest free explanation of why this works.

The test that matters: can you move it alone?

Every coop here has wheels. Not all of them move. The honest test is whether one adult can lift one end and walk it, on your ground, with the birds inside. A coop that needs two people gets moved on weekends; a coop one person can move gets moved on schedule, which is the entire point.

Weight scales with capacity, so there is a real ceiling. Up to about six birds, one person can usually manage. At eight to twelve, assume two people or a wheel-lift kit.

The picks

Ranked by how practical the move actually is, then by build and capacity.

MEDEHOO Mobile Chicken Coop with Run (6-8 hens)

MEDEHOO

A mobile coop-and-run for 6-8 birds with a weatherproof asphalt roof rather than painted ply. The roof is why this one survives a third winter when cheaper wheeled coops do not.

Published specifications
Stated capacity6-8 chickens
RoofWeatherproof asphalt

What it does well

  • Asphalt roofing is the single best durability upgrade on a wooden coop and it is fitted here
  • Attached large run plus wheels is the combination that keeps ground healthy
  • Sized for a realistic backyard flock rather than two birds

Where it falls short

  • No interior floor area published
  • Asphalt adds weight on top, which makes the coop harder to move single-handed
  • Supplied mesh will still need upgrading for raccoon country

Aivituvin Mobile Chicken Coop with Wheels (2-4 hens)

Aivituvin

A wheeled, expandable coop-and-run for 2-4 birds. The wheels are the point: moving it weekly stops the ground underneath turning to bare mud, which is the usual fate of a fixed small run.

Published specifications
Stated capacity2-4 chickens
Nesting boxes2
MobilityWheels fitted
RunAttached, expandable
Floor areaNot published by manufacturer

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • Wheels mean you can rotate it and let grass recover — a real husbandry advantage, not a gimmick
  • Attached run means it works out of the box without building a second enclosure
  • Two nest boxes for up to four hens is correct, not padded
  • Expandable run section adds space without replacing the coop

Where it falls short

  • No floor-area figure published, so capacity has to be taken on trust
  • Wheeled coops are light by design, which also means easier for a determined raccoon to work at
  • An attached run on a mobile coop is rarely tall enough to stand in

GUTINNEEN Chicken Coop on Wheels (6-8 hens)

GUTINNEEN

A 67-inch weatherproof wooden coop on wheels for 6-8 birds. At this size a mobile coop stops being a novelty and starts saving your lawn — but it needs two adults to move.

Length67.3 in

What it does well

  • Published length, so the footprint is checkable
  • Wheels at an eight-bird size are rare and genuinely useful for rotating ground
  • Weatherproof roof rather than bare ply is the right call in this price band

Where it falls short

  • No floor area published; eight standard hens need roughly 32 sq ft inside
  • Heavy enough that moving it is a two-person job
  • Wheels add ground clearance, which also means a gap a predator can work under

PetsCosset Mobile Chicken Tractor with Wheels

A weatherproof wheeled hen house with a nest box and roosting bar. Not large, but it is a genuine tractor at a price where most wheeled coops are toys.

Stated capacityNot published by manufacturer

What it does well

  • Publishes that it has a roosting bar — more listings leave hens to sleep in the nest box
  • Wheels at this price point are rare
  • Light enough for one adult to move daily, which is the whole point of a tractor

Where it falls short

  • No stated capacity or floor area; treat it as a three-to-four-hen house
  • Light construction is the trade-off for being movable
  • Needs to be moved regularly or the ground beneath it will still be ruined

GUTINNEEN 68in Mobile Coop (8-12 hens)

GUTINNEEN

A 68-inch wooden coop on large wheels with four nest boxes and four perches, stated for 8-12 birds. The published perch and box counts are the useful detail; take the upper bird count with caution.

Published specifications
Stated capacity8-12 chickens
Length68 in

MobilityLarge wheels

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • Four nest boxes and four perches are both published — most listings state neither
  • Large wheels make a 12-bird coop movable, which is otherwise unheard of at this size
  • Four boxes is exactly right for twelve hens on the one-per-four rule

Where it falls short

  • 68 inches of length cannot hold twelve standard hens at 4 sq ft each — plan for eight
  • No interior floor area published
  • Wheels plus weight means it will need a hand to move on soft ground

A small flock of hens foraging on green pasture in bright daylight
The reason to go mobile: grass that recovers between moves, and birds getting fresh forage rather than bare earth.

How often to move it

  • Every 1-3 days on good pasture with a small flock. The grass should still be green when you move off it.
  • Daily if the coop is tight for the flock or the ground is soft.
  • Weekly at most — past that you are running a fixed run with extra steps, and the ground will not come back.

What mobile coops give up

  1. Weight, and therefore security. Light construction is what makes it movable and also what a determined raccoon works at. Add a proper latch.
  2. Ground clearance. Wheels leave a gap underneath. A skirt or a close-fitting apron matters more on a mobile coop than a fixed one.
  3. Insulation. Thin walls move easily and hold no heat. In a hard winter most keepers park the tractor and use a fixed coop.
  4. Size. There is no mobile coop for twenty birds that one person can shift.

Frequently asked questions

How often should you move a chicken tractor?
Every one to three days on grass, moving before the ground is bare. Daily if the flock is tight for the space or the ground is soft.
Are mobile chicken coops predator proof?
Less so than a fixed coop, because light construction is what makes them movable and the wheels leave a gap underneath. Upgrade the latch and fit a close-fitting apron or skirt.
How many chickens fit in a chicken tractor?
Practically, two to eight. Above that the coop becomes too heavy for one person to move, which defeats the purpose.
Can you use a mobile coop in winter?
In a mild winter, yes. In a hard one, thin walls and ground clearance both work against you, and frozen ground makes moving it unpleasant. Many keepers park the tractor over winter.
