A treadle feeder is a hopper with a hinged lid and a step. The hen walks onto the step, her weight levers the lid open, she eats; she steps off and the lid shuts. That is the whole idea, and it solves three problems at once: rodents cannot open it, wild birds cannot open it, and rain cannot get in.

Why it is the only rodent-proof design

Rats do not need much. A port feeder's open holes, a hanging pan, a trough left out overnight — all of them are accessible, and a rat population that finds a reliable food source grows fast. A treadle lid stays shut unless something heavy enough is standing on the step, and a rat is not. That is a physical exclusion rather than a deterrent, which is why it works where everything else fails.

It also stops wild birds, which matters beyond the cost of the feed: USDA's Defend the Flock guidance notes that wild birds can introduce disease to domestic flocks. A feeder that wild birds cannot share is a biosecurity measure, not just an economy.

Grandpa's Feeders Automatic Chicken Feeder, 20 lb

Grandpa's Feeders

The treadle feeder everything else copies. The hen's weight on the step opens the lid; a rat is too light and a sparrow cannot work it at all. 20 lb is right for up to about six hens.

What it does well

  • A closed lid is the only feeder design that genuinely denies rodents and wild birds
  • Keeps feed dry in rain, which no open hanging feeder does
  • Eliminates the billing-out waste that makes chickens look like they eat twice what they do
  • Hens learn the treadle in a day or two with the lid propped open

Where it falls short

  • Several times the price of a hanging feeder of the same capacity
  • Bantams and very young birds may be too light to open it reliably
  • There is a training period, and it needs the lid propped during it

VEVOR Automatic Treadle Feeder, 40 lb

VEVOR

A galvanized 40 lb rainproof treadle feeder with a lockable lid, at a fraction of the premium brands. The mechanism is cruder, but the principle — a closed lid rodents cannot open — is the same.

Published specifications
Capacity40 lb
MechanismTreadle, rainproof

What it does well

  • Galvanized steel body, published — not plastic, so rodents cannot chew in
  • Lockable lid stops a clever raccoon lifting it
  • 40 lb capacity at roughly a third of the premium-brand price
  • Rainproof, stated

Where it falls short

  • Budget treadle mechanisms are stiffer, so the training period is longer
  • Galvanized steel will rust at cut edges after a few seasons outdoors
  • Heavier than plastic when full — about 40 lb of feed plus the feeder

#3 · A treadle feeder for a mid-size flock

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026

RentACoop Automatic Treadle Feeder, 25 lb

RentACoop

A 25 lb treadle feeder — the capacity most backyard flocks actually want, sitting between the 20 and 40 lb options and priced below the 40.

What it does well

  • 25 lb hits the useful middle: about a week and a half for eight hens
  • Treadle mechanism gives the same rodent exclusion as pricier models
  • Keeps rain out of the feed

Where it falls short

  • Still a significant premium over a hanging feeder
  • Lighter breeds may struggle with the treadle at first
  • Material and dimensions are not published on the listing

Grandpa's Feeders Automatic Chicken Feeder, 40 lb

Grandpa's Feeders

The 40 lb version of the same treadle mechanism. For a flock of ten or more it halves the number of refills and still shuts rodents out completely.

Published specifications
Capacity40 lb
MechanismTreadle — bird weight opens the lid
Rodent resistanceRat and rodent proof (manufacturer claim)
WasteNo-waste design (manufacturer claim)

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • 40 lb is roughly two weeks for ten hens, so refills become fortnightly
  • Same closed-lid rodent exclusion as the 20 lb model
  • Deep hopper means less chance of the feed bridging and jamming

Where it falls short

  • The most expensive feeder on this page
  • 40 lb of feed sitting in a feeder in summer will go stale before a small flock finishes it
  • Large enough that it needs a sheltered spot inside the run

XINYI Metal Treadle Feeder, 12 lb

XINYI

A 12 lb metal treadle feeder with a weatherproof lid. The right capacity for a very small flock, where a 40 lb hopper would just let the feed go stale.

Published specifications
Capacity12 lb
MechanismTreadle
MaterialMetal
LidWeatherproof

What it does well

  • 12 lb means a three-hen flock finishes the hopper before the feed stales
  • Metal body, so nothing to chew through
  • Cheapest route into treadle feeding

Where it falls short

  • Light birds have the most trouble with treadles, and small flocks often mean bantams
  • 12 lb needs refilling weekly even for three hens
  • Small metal feeders dent easily in transit

20 hens5 lb35 lbabout 4 daysabout 8 days
Based on Extension's published figure of roughly 0.25 lb of feed per mature hen per day. Intake rises in cold weather and falls in heat. A hopper that lasts more than about three weeks will stale before it empties in summer.

Pick the capacity that gives one to three weeks of feed, not the biggest available. Feed held much longer than that absorbs moisture and stales — particularly in summer.

The training period, honestly

Hens do not understand a treadle feeder on day one. The standard method works reliably:

  1. Prop the lid fully open for three or four days so they learn there is feed inside.
  2. Then prop it half open for another two or three days, so they start associating the step with the lid moving.
  3. Then let it work normally. Most flocks have it within a week.
  4. Keep the old feeder available at reduced capacity during the transition, then remove it.

What to look for in the mechanism

  • A steel body. Rodents chew plastic given enough nights.
  • A long treadle step, so a bird standing anywhere on it opens the lid.
  • An adjustable counterweight or spring if available, so you can tune it for lighter birds.
  • A lockable lid, which stops a raccoon simply lifting it.
  • A quiet action. Loud clanging lids put nervous birds off, which lengthens training.

Where to site it

Under cover, on a hard level surface, with enough room in front for the hen to stand squarely on the step. A treadle feeder on soft ground sinks unevenly and the lid stops closing fully — which quietly undoes the entire point of owning one. Check it periodically: a treadle feeder whose lid is not seating is just an expensive open feeder.

Frequently asked questions

Do treadle chicken feeders really keep rats out?
Yes, provided the lid seats fully when no bird is on the step. The lid is a physical barrier rather than a deterrent, which is why this is the only feeder design that reliably excludes rodents.
How long do chickens take to learn a treadle feeder?
Usually under a week. Prop the lid fully open for three or four days, then half open for a few more, then let it work normally. Keep the old feeder available during the transition.
Will bantams work a treadle feeder?
Often not — the mechanism needs a certain weight. If your flock is bantams or young pullets, a port feeder sited somewhere rodent-proof is a better choice.
What size treadle feeder should I buy?
One holding one to three weeks of feed. At roughly 0.25 lb per hen per day that is about 12 lb for three hens, 20-25 lb for six, and 40 lb for ten or more.
Are treadle feeders worth the extra cost?
If you have rodents, or wild birds sharing the feed, yes clearly — they are the only design that excludes both. If neither is a problem, a port feeder gets most of the waste benefit for much less.
