A roll-away nest box has a gently sloped floor and a covered collection tray at the back or front. The hen lays, the egg rolls out of her reach within seconds, and it waits in a shaded tray until you collect it. Almost everything that goes wrong with eggs between laying and collecting is prevented by that one mechanism.
What it prevents
- Dirty eggs. The egg is out of the nest before any hen can stand on it with muddy feet.
- Broken eggs. Most backyard breakages happen when a hen shuffles into an occupied nest.
- Egg eating. This is the big one. Egg eating almost always starts with an accidentally broken egg being tasted, and once learned it is very hard to stop. A roll-away box removes the opportunity entirely.
- Reaching under a sitting hen. Collection from a tray is faster and calmer for everyone.

4-Hole Heavy Duty Metal Roll-Away Nesting Box
GenericFour roll-away holes in heavy-duty metal. Roll-away is the single best upgrade for egg cleanliness: the egg leaves the nest the moment it is laid, so it cannot be stood on, pecked or soiled.
| Holes | 4 |
|---|---|
| Covers | Up to 16 hens at 1 box per 4 |
| Material | Heavy duty metal |
| Type | Roll-away with egg collection |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- Eggs roll out of reach immediately — the end of dirty eggs and most egg-eating habits
- Metal construction leaves mites nowhere to hide and lasts far longer than ply
- Four holes covers a sixteen-hen flock
- Collecting from a tray rather than reaching under a hen is faster and calmer
Where it falls short
- Roll-away boxes are the most expensive nest option
- Needs the right slope: too flat and eggs stay, too steep and they crack
- Metal is cold in winter unless you line the pad area

#2 · A large flock, all boxes in one unit

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026
GarveeLife 8-Compartment Roll-Away Nesting Box
GarveeLifeEight roll-away compartments in one bank, covering up to thirty-two hens. At that scale a single unit beats eight separate boxes for mounting and for cleaning.
| Compartments | 8 |
|---|---|
| Covers | Up to 32 hens at 1 box per 4 |
| Type | Roll-away nesting box bank |
| Material | Not published by manufacturer |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- Eight roll-away holes in one unit — far easier to mount than eight separate boxes
- Scales to a flock most backyard keepers will never outgrow
- One collection point for the whole bank
Where it falls short
- Needs a long clear wall and solid fixings
- Material not published
- Overkill, and overpriced, for a flock under about twelve hens

#3 · Roll-away at the lowest price

Roll Away Nest Box for Egg Collection, 4 Holes
GenericFour roll-away holes at roughly half the price of the heavy metal banks. Same principle, lighter construction — a good way to find out whether roll-away suits your coop.
| Holes | 4 |
|---|---|
| Type | Roll-away nest box for egg collector |
| Finish | Orange |
| Material | Not published by manufacturer |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- Cheapest route into roll-away nesting
- Four holes covers up to sixteen hens
- Eggs leave the nest immediately, which keeps them clean and unbroken
Where it falls short
- Material not published — expect lighter construction than the metal banks
- Light boxes need firm mounting or they shift and the roll angle changes
- No pad included; roll-away still needs a nest liner to cushion the egg

#4 · Two boxes and a collection tray for eight hens

2-Compartment Nesting Box with Egg Collection
GenericA two-compartment box designed for egg collection — the eggs roll or sit where you can reach them without disturbing a sitting hen. Covers eight hens on the one-per-four rule.
| Compartments | 2 |
|---|---|
| Covers | Up to 8 hens at 1 box per 4 |
| Feature | Designed for egg collection |
| Material | Not published by manufacturer |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- Collection design means fewer eggs cracked by hens shuffling in the box
- Two compartments covers the commonest backyard flock size
- Compact enough for a small coop wall
Where it falls short
- Material and mounting are not published
- Collection trays need emptying daily or eggs pile up and crack anyway
- Two boxes will still have a queue — hens are like that

#5 · Boxes mounted on the outside of a coop

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026
PETSFIT 4-Hole Nesting Box with PVC Waterproof Roof
PETSFITFour holes with a PVC waterproof roof and privacy covers. The roof is what makes it an external box: you can hang it on the coop's outside wall and collect without going in.
| Holes | 4 |
|---|---|
| Roof | PVC waterproof |
| Privacy | Privacy cover fitted |
| Mounting | External wall mount |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- Waterproof roof means it can hang outside the coop and free up interior floor space
- Privacy covers encourage hens to use the boxes rather than a corner of the floor
- Collecting from outside means not disturbing the whole flock for two eggs
Where it falls short
- External boxes are a predator access point unless the lid latches properly
- Cutting a pop-hole through a coop wall is a real job
- Material of the body is not published

Sizing the bank
| Flock size | Nest boxes | Box size (standard hens) | Height above floor |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-4 hens | 2 | 12 x 12 x 12 in | 18-24 in, below the roost |
| 5-8 hens | 3 | 12 x 12 x 12 in | 18-24 in, below the roost |
| 9-12 hens | 4 | 12 x 12 x 12 in | 18-24 in, below the roost |
| 13-16 hens | 5 | 12 x 12 x 12 in | 18-24 in, below the roost |
| 17-20 hens | 6 | 12 x 12 x 12 in | 18-24 in, below the roost |
Roll-away boxes come as multi-hole banks, which makes the box count easy: a four-hole bank covers up to sixteen hens on the extension rule, and an eight-hole bank covers thirty-two. For most backyard flocks a two or four-hole unit is right, and the eight-hole banks are genuinely for larger operations.
Getting the slope right
This is the one thing that makes a roll-away box work or not:
- Too flat and the egg stays in the nest, which turns an expensive box into an ordinary one.
- Too steep and the egg accelerates into the tray and cracks.
- Mount it level side to side. A bank that is twisted on an uneven wall rolls eggs to one corner.
- Check the tray is shaded. Light on the eggs in the tray will encourage pecking at them through the gap.
- Test with a few eggs by hand before you trust it.
Most units arrive with the slope built in, so the task is mounting them level and square. Fix them to structure, not to thin cladding — a bank full of eggs is heavier than it looks.
Nest material in a roll-away box
Roll-away boxes still need a liner, and the liner has to be thin enough to let the egg roll. A purpose-made nest pad is the usual answer: it cushions the egg at the moment of laying but is flat enough not to stop it rolling. Loose shavings tend to collect at the low end and block the roll, so they are a poor fit here. Nest pads.
Metal or plastic?
Both are far better than wood here, because a sitting hen has her skin against the surface for an hour at a time and wooden seams are where mites live. Metal is more durable and colder in winter; plastic is warmer and lighter. Either way the box washes down completely, which wood does not.
Is it worth the money?
Honestly: if your eggs are already clean and nothing is getting broken, a standard box is fine and the money is better spent elsewhere. Roll-away earns its price in three specific situations — a flock that has started egg-eating, a muddy site where eggs arrive filthy, or a keeper who cannot collect eggs more than once a day.
