Hens do not eat tidily. Left with an open trough they sweep feed sideways with their beaks looking for the bits they prefer, and a surprising proportion of what you buy ends up on the floor, where it either rots or feeds rodents. That single behavior — billing out — is what feeder design exists to solve, and it is why the ranking here leads with waste control rather than capacity.
How we ranked these
Waste control first: does the design physically prevent a hen from sweeping feed out? Capacity second, matched to realistic flock sizes rather than maximized. Rodent resistance third, because an open feeder left out overnight is a rat feeder. Weather resistance fourth. Then value.

The three designs that work
Treadle feeders — the only rodent-proof option
The hen stands on a step, her weight opens the lid, she eats, she steps off, the lid closes. A rat is too light to open it and a wild bird cannot work the mechanism at all. It is the only design here that genuinely excludes rodents and keeps feed dry in rain. The trade-offs are price, a training period of a day or two, and the fact that very light birds or young pullets may struggle with the treadle.
Port feeders — the best value
A sealed hopper with holes the hen puts her head through. She can reach the feed but cannot get her beak sideways to sweep it out. Waste drops dramatically for a fraction of a treadle feeder's cost. Ports stay open, so rodents can reach the feed inside them overnight — but the bulk of the hopper is sealed.
Hanging feeders — the traditional answer
An open-pan feeder hung at the hens' shoulder height. Height is what does the work: a hen can reach down into the pan but cannot get purchase to scoop. Cheap and simple, but offers nothing against rain or rodents unless it hangs inside a closed coop.

Grandpa's Feeders Automatic Chicken Feeder, 20 lb
Grandpa's FeedersThe treadle feeder everything else copies. The hen's weight on the step opens the lid; a rat is too light and a sparrow cannot work it at all. 20 lb is right for up to about six hens.
| Capacity | 20 lb |
|---|---|
| Mechanism | Treadle — bird weight opens the lid |
| Rodent resistance | Rat and rodent proof (manufacturer claim) |
| Waste | No-waste design (manufacturer claim) |
| Material | Not published by manufacturer |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- A closed lid is the only feeder design that genuinely denies rodents and wild birds
- Keeps feed dry in rain, which no open hanging feeder does
- Eliminates the billing-out waste that makes chickens look like they eat twice what they do
- Hens learn the treadle in a day or two with the lid propped open
Where it falls short
- Several times the price of a hanging feeder of the same capacity
- Bantams and very young birds may be too light to open it reliably
- There is a training period, and it needs the lid propped during it

#2 · Treadle performance at a third of the price

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026
VEVOR Automatic Treadle Feeder, 40 lb
VEVORA galvanized 40 lb rainproof treadle feeder with a lockable lid, at a fraction of the premium brands. The mechanism is cruder, but the principle — a closed lid rodents cannot open — is the same.
| Capacity | 40 lb |
|---|---|
| Mechanism | Treadle, rainproof |
| Lid | Lockable |
| Material | Galvanized steel |
| Waste | No-waste design (manufacturer claim) |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- Galvanized steel body, published — not plastic, so rodents cannot chew in
- Lockable lid stops a clever raccoon lifting it
- 40 lb capacity at roughly a third of the premium-brand price
- Rainproof, stated
Where it falls short
- Budget treadle mechanisms are stiffer, so the training period is longer
- Galvanized steel will rust at cut edges after a few seasons outdoors
- Heavier than plastic when full — about 40 lb of feed plus the feeder

#3 · Thirty pounds of feed in a lockable metal hopper

Tgeyd 30 lb Feeder with 6 No-Waste Ports
TgeydA heavy-duty 30 lb metal feeder with six no-waste ports, adjustable height and a locking lid. The locking lid is what lifts it above an ordinary port feeder — it keeps rain and raccoons out of the hopper.
| Capacity | 30 lb |
|---|---|
| Feeding ports | 6 |
| Lid | Locking |
| Height | Adjustable |
| Material | Heavy-duty metal |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- Locking lid keeps the hopper dry and stops raccoons helping themselves
- 30 lb capacity means fortnightly refills for a six-hen flock
- Adjustable height lets you set the ports correctly as pullets grow
Where it falls short
- The ports themselves are still open at hen level, so rodents can reach the feed in them
- 30 lb of feed plus a metal hopper is heavy to reposition
- Port diameter is not published

#4 · Twelve ports for a big flock at feeding time

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026
Metal No-Waste Feeder, 20 lb with 12 Ports and Tripod Stand
GenericA 20 lb metal hopper with twelve ports and a four-height tripod stand. Twelve ports ends the feeding-time scrum, and adjustable height keeps the ports at hen shoulder level, which is what stops the scooping.
| Capacity | 20 lb |
|---|---|
| Feeding ports | 12 |
| Height settings | 4 adjustable heights |
| Material | Metal |
| Stand | Tripod, included |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- Twelve ports means a dozen hens eat at once instead of the bottom birds waiting
- Four published height settings — port height is the real variable behind feed waste
- Metal body resists chewing better than a plastic bucket conversion
- Free-standing, so it does not need a hanging point
Where it falls short
- Open ports do not keep rodents out overnight
- A tripod on soft ground sinks and tips; put it on a paver
- Dimensions and gauge are not published

#5 · A tidy in-coop feeder for six hens

Omlet No Waste Chicken Feeder, 12 lb
OmletA 12 lb anti-spill feeder with five ports, which Omlet states feeds six hens for seven days. A published feed-days figure is rare and makes planning refills easy.
| Capacity | 12 lb |
|---|---|
| Feeding ports | 5 |
| Stated duration | 6 hens for 7 days |
| Design | Anti-spill |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- Publishes hens-per-days, which almost no feeder listing does
- Five ports means six hens can feed without squabbling at a single trough
- Port design is the simplest effective answer to billing-out waste
Where it falls short
- Open ports do not exclude rodents the way a treadle lid does
- 12 lb is a weekly refill for six hens, as the listing itself says
- Priced like a premium accessory rather than a basic feeder

#6 · Converting a bucket you already own

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026
DIY No-Waste Feeder Port Kit, 6 Ports
GenericSix rain-hooded ports and the hardware to fit them to any bucket. The cheapest no-waste feeder there is, because you supply the bucket — and a 5-gallon bucket holds about 25 lb of pellets.
| Ports | 6 |
|---|---|
| Fits | Standard buckets (bucket not included) |
| Type | DIY no-waste feeder ports |
| Capacity | Depends on the bucket used |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- By far the lowest cost per port of any option here
- A 5-gallon bucket plus six ports is a 25 lb no-waste feeder for pocket change
- Replaceable: if a port cracks you swap one, not the whole feeder
- You choose the bucket, so you choose the capacity
Where it falls short
- You have to drill the holes accurately or the ports leak feed
- A plastic bucket is chewable — rats will work on it given time
- No lid is included, so rain protection depends on your bucket's lid

How much feed, and therefore what capacity
| Flock size | Feed per day | Feed per week | 20 lb feeder lasts | 40 lb feeder lasts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 hens | 0.5 lb | 3.5 lb | about 5 weeks | about 11 weeks |
| 4 hens | 1 lb | 7 lb | about 3 weeks | about 5 weeks |
| 6 hens | 1.5 lb | 10.5 lb | about 13 days | about 4 weeks |
| 8 hens | 2 lb | 14 lb | about 10 days | about 20 days |
| 10 hens | 2.5 lb | 17.5 lb | about 8 days | about 16 days |
| 20 hens | 5 lb | 35 lb | about 4 days | about 8 days |
Those figures come from Extension's guidance on feeding chickens for egg production, which puts a mature hen at roughly 0.25 lb of feed per day — about 3 lb a week for a 6 lb bird. Intake rises in cold weather as birds burn energy keeping warm, and falls in heat.
Height matters as much as design
Whatever feeder you buy, set the ports or the pan rim at roughly the height of the hens' backs. Too low and they stand in it and scoop; too high and the smaller birds in the flock cannot reach. Several feeders on this list publish adjustable heights, which matters more than it sounds — you will be raising it as pullets grow and as litter builds up underneath.
Where to put it
- In the run, not the coop, if you can. Feed in the coop means dust and spillage in the bedding.
- Under cover. Wet feed molds, and moldy feed is genuinely dangerous.
- Away from the roost, so droppings cannot land in it.
- On something hard if it is free-standing — a tripod on soft ground sinks and tips.
