The phrase "no waste" is printed on nearly every chicken feeder sold, which makes it useless as a filter. What matters is the mechanism, and there are only three that actually work. This page sorts the products by mechanism so you can see which claim is backed by a design and which is just text on a listing.

What waste actually is

A hen eating from an open trough turns her head sideways and sweeps. She is looking for the bits she prefers — the maize in a mixed feed, or the larger particles in a crumble — and the rest goes over the edge. On the ground it gets trodden in, rained on, and eaten by rodents. None of that is greed; it is normal foraging behavior expressed in the wrong container.

The three mechanisms that work

  1. Ports. A hole the hen puts her head through, so her beak cannot travel sideways. Simple, cheap and effective.
  2. Height. A pan hung at shoulder height gives no purchase for a sideways sweep. Oldest trick there is.
  3. A lid. A treadle feeder's lid is closed except when a bird is on the step, so nothing can be swept out when no one is there — and nothing can get in either.

Anything else — a deeper trough, a wider lip, a "special design" with no stated mechanism — is marketing.

Tgeyd 30 lb Feeder with 6 No-Waste Ports

Tgeyd

A heavy-duty 30 lb metal feeder with six no-waste ports, adjustable height and a locking lid. The locking lid is what lifts it above an ordinary port feeder — it keeps rain and raccoons out of the hopper.

What it does well

  • Locking lid keeps the hopper dry and stops raccoons helping themselves
  • 30 lb capacity means fortnightly refills for a six-hen flock
  • Adjustable height lets you set the ports correctly as pullets grow

Where it falls short

  • The ports themselves are still open at hen level, so rodents can reach the feed in them
  • 30 lb of feed plus a metal hopper is heavy to reposition
  • Port diameter is not published

Metal No-Waste Feeder, 20 lb with 12 Ports and Tripod Stand

Generic

A 20 lb metal hopper with twelve ports and a four-height tripod stand. Twelve ports ends the feeding-time scrum, and adjustable height keeps the ports at hen shoulder level, which is what stops the scooping.

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • Twelve ports means a dozen hens eat at once instead of the bottom birds waiting
  • Four published height settings — port height is the real variable behind feed waste
  • Metal body resists chewing better than a plastic bucket conversion
  • Free-standing, so it does not need a hanging point

Where it falls short

  • Open ports do not keep rodents out overnight
  • A tripod on soft ground sinks and tips; put it on a paver
  • Dimensions and gauge are not published

DIY No-Waste Feeder Port Kit, 6 Ports

Generic

Six rain-hooded ports and the hardware to fit them to any bucket. The cheapest no-waste feeder there is, because you supply the bucket — and a 5-gallon bucket holds about 25 lb of pellets.

Published specifications
Ports6
FitsStandard buckets (bucket not included)

CapacityDepends on the bucket used

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • By far the lowest cost per port of any option here
  • A 5-gallon bucket plus six ports is a 25 lb no-waste feeder for pocket change
  • Replaceable: if a port cracks you swap one, not the whole feeder
  • You choose the bucket, so you choose the capacity

Where it falls short

  • You have to drill the holes accurately or the ports leak feed
  • A plastic bucket is chewable — rats will work on it given time
  • No lid is included, so rain protection depends on your bucket's lid

#4 · A tidy in-coop feeder for six hens

Omlet No Waste Chicken Feeder, 12 lb from Omlet
$89.99on Amazon

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026

Omlet No Waste Chicken Feeder, 12 lb

Omlet

A 12 lb anti-spill feeder with five ports, which Omlet states feeds six hens for seven days. A published feed-days figure is rare and makes planning refills easy.

Published specifications
Capacity12 lb
Feeding ports5
Stated duration6 hens for 7 days
DesignAnti-spill

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • Publishes hens-per-days, which almost no feeder listing does
  • Five ports means six hens can feed without squabbling at a single trough
  • Port design is the simplest effective answer to billing-out waste

Where it falls short

  • Open ports do not exclude rodents the way a treadle lid does
  • 12 lb is a weekly refill for six hens, as the listing itself says
  • Priced like a premium accessory rather than a basic feeder

Grandpa's Feeders Automatic Chicken Feeder, 20 lb

Grandpa's Feeders

The treadle feeder everything else copies. The hen's weight on the step opens the lid; a rat is too light and a sparrow cannot work it at all. 20 lb is right for up to about six hens.

Published specifications
Capacity20 lb
MechanismTreadle — bird weight opens the lid
Rodent resistanceRat and rodent proof (manufacturer claim)
WasteNo-waste design (manufacturer claim)
MaterialNot published by manufacturer

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • A closed lid is the only feeder design that genuinely denies rodents and wild birds
  • Keeps feed dry in rain, which no open hanging feeder does
  • Eliminates the billing-out waste that makes chickens look like they eat twice what they do
  • Hens learn the treadle in a day or two with the lid propped open

Where it falls short

  • Several times the price of a hanging feeder of the same capacity
  • Bantams and very young birds may be too light to open it reliably
  • There is a training period, and it needs the lid propped during it

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026

KOL Hanging Metal Feeder, 20 lb with 12 Ports

KOL

A 20 lb hanging metal feeder with twelve ports and no assembly. Hanging it at hen shoulder height is the oldest waste-control trick there is, and the ports do the rest.

Published specifications
Capacity20 lb

MountingHanging, no installation required

What it does well

  • Hanging keeps the ports off the floor and out of the bedding
  • Twelve ports for a dozen hens
  • No assembly — out of the box and hung in a minute

Where it falls short

  • Needs a strong hanging point inside the coop or a covered run
  • Lid type is not published, so assume it needs shelter from rain
  • Swings if the birds crowd it, which spills feed

Port count matters more than you expect

A six-port feeder for twelve hens produces queueing, and queueing produces pushing, and pushing produces spilled feed from the ports. Match ports to flock size: roughly one port per one to two hens. A twelve-port feeder for a flock of twelve is not excessive, it is correct.

Flock sizePorts you wantWhy
2-4 hens4Everyone eats at once, no pushing
6 hens4-6Enough that the bottom birds get a turn
8-10 hens8Peak feeding time is late afternoon and they all arrive
12+ hens12Below this you get a queue and spillage at the ports
One port per one to two birds is the practical rule.

The bucket conversion is genuinely the best value

A six-port kit and a 5-gallon bucket you already own is a 25 lb no-waste feeder for the price of a bag of feed. The only skill required is drilling the holes squarely so the ports seat without leaking. If a port cracks you replace one part, not the whole feeder. For most backyard flocks this is the rational purchase, and the reason to spend more is rodents rather than waste.

Frequently asked questions

How do no-waste chicken feeders work?
Three mechanisms: ports that stop a hen moving her beak sideways, height that removes her leverage, and a lid that is closed when no bird is standing on the treadle. Anything without one of those three is not a no-waste design.
How many feeding ports do I need?
Roughly one port per one to two hens. Six hens want four to six ports; twelve hens want twelve. Too few causes queueing, pushing and spillage at the ports.
Can I make a no-waste feeder myself?
Yes, and it is the best value option. A port kit plus a 5-gallon bucket is a 25 lb no-waste feeder for very little money. Drill the holes squarely so the ports seat without leaking.
Do port feeders keep rodents out?
Not fully. The hopper is sealed but the ports stay open, so rodents can reach the feed sitting in them. A treadle feeder with a closed lid is the only design that excludes them.
How much feed does a hen actually waste?
It varies with feeder design, feed form and flock, so we will not print a percentage we cannot verify. What is reliable is the direction: switching from an open trough to a port or treadle feeder visibly reduces feed on the ground.
