A coop with an attached run is the simplest thing a first-time keeper can buy: it arrives, you build it, the birds have somewhere to live and somewhere to scratch. The catch is in the advertising. The headline length almost always covers the coop *and* the run, so a "137 inch coop" might be 40 inches of house and 97 inches of wire.

Run space is the figure to compare

Penn State Extension puts outside space at 8-10 sq ft per large chicken. For six hens that is 48-60 sq ft of run. Very few attached runs reach it: an attached run on a mid-size coop is typically 15-25 sq ft. That is not necessarily a dealbreaker — it is fine if the birds also free-range daily — but it is what you are buying, and it should be a decision rather than a surprise.

PawHut 137in Chicken Coop with Extra Large Run (4-6 hens)

PawHut

137 inches of coop and run for only 4-6 birds, which is the right ratio: most coop-and-run sets give a six-hen flock a run a fifth of this size.

What it does well

  • An unusually honest space-to-bird ratio — lots of run for a modest flock
  • Published length, so you can plan the footprint
  • More run space directly reduces feather-pecking and mud

Where it falls short

  • No interior floor area published
  • 137 inches is a long strip that needs a long piece of yard
  • Supplied mesh is the usual upgrade candidate

Petsfit Outdoor Chicken Coop with Run (4-6 hens)

Petsfit

A coop-plus-run with three nest boxes stated for 4-6 birds. The attached run is the reason to buy it: most coops in this price band sell you a house and leave the enclosure to you.

What it does well

  • Three nest boxes comfortably covers six hens — they will all use one anyway
  • Attached run makes it usable the day it is built
  • Mid-price wooden coops in this size are the easiest to modify with hardware cloth

Where it falls short

  • Run wire on coops at this price is usually hexagonal netting, not hardware cloth — budget to re-skin it
  • No published floor area to verify the 4-6 claim
  • Six hens in the house plus this run is tight; fine if they free-range by day

PetsCosset 116in Chicken Coop with Run (8-10 hens)

PetsCosset

A 116-inch coop-and-run stated for 8-10 birds. The attraction is that the house and the enclosure arrive together and match — no carpentry required.

What it does well

  • Published length lets you check the footprint against your yard
  • House plus run in one delivery, nothing to build from scratch
  • Sized for a realistic ten-hen backyard flock

Where it falls short

  • No interior floor area published — ten hens need about 40 sq ft of house
  • Attached runs on wooden coops are rarely walk-in height
  • Re-skinning the lower run panels in hardware cloth should be assumed

Ketive 83-inch Chicken Coop with Run (4-6 hens)

Ketive

83 inches of coop-and-run for 4-6 birds. The published length is the useful number here: it is one of the few listings in this band that tells you the footprint before you buy.

What it does well

  • Published overall length, so you can mark it out on the lawn before ordering
  • Long, narrow footprint fits down the side of a house where square coops will not
  • Run and house in one purchase

Where it falls short

  • 83 inches total includes the run, so the house itself is small for six hens
  • No interior floor area published
  • Expect to replace the supplied mesh if anything larger than a rat visits your yard

TRYKERPET Large Wooden Coop and Run (10-12 hens)

TRYKERPET

A large wooden coop-and-run stated for 10-12 birds. The value is real; so is the need to verify the dimensions and upgrade the wire before any bird sleeps in it.

What it does well

  • Twelve-bird stated capacity at a mid-range price
  • Wooden frame is easy to reinforce and re-skin
  • Run included, so there is nothing else to buy to get started

Where it falls short

  • No dimensions or floor area published, which at a 12-bird claim is the figure that matters most
  • Assume hexagonal netting and budget for hardware cloth
  • Large wooden flat-packs need a level base and two people

COZIWOW 9ft Extra Large Coop with Full Waterproof Cover

COZIWOW

A nine-foot enclosure with a full waterproof cover. Read it as a large covered run with a shelter rather than a true 20-bird coop — but as a run, the full cover is what keeps winter mud under control.

TypeLarge coop-and-run enclosure

What it does well

  • A full waterproof cover over the whole footprint is the single best mud-control feature a run can have
  • Nine feet of length is real space for a flock to spread out on a wet day
  • Covered runs also block hawks, which an open-topped run does not

Where it falls short

  • No stated bird capacity — size it from the footprint, not the marketing
  • Enclosure-grade mesh, not a predator-proof house: the sleeping quarters still need securing
  • Large covers catch wind; this needs anchoring properly

The attached-run trade-offs

Neither is wrong. The attached run is a convenience purchase; the separate run is a space purchase.

Upgrade the mesh, whatever you buy

Attached runs are almost universally supplied with hexagonal poultry netting. Extension's predator guidance is explicit that this keeps birds in and flying predators out but lets ground predators reach through. The standard fix is hardware cloth on the lower half of the run, ordinary netting above. A 16 in x 50 ft roll of half-inch hardware cloth does the lower band of most attached runs and costs a fraction of the coop.

Frequently asked questions

How much run space do chickens need?
Penn State Extension recommends 8 sq ft per laying hen and 10 sq ft per large chicken of outside run. Six hens therefore want 48-60 sq ft.
Is an attached run big enough on its own?
Usually not for full-time confinement. Most attached runs provide 15-25 sq ft total. They work well if the birds also get supervised free-range time each day.
Can I extend an attached run?
Sometimes, with a bolt-on panel section, but most are not designed for it. If you expect to grow the flock, a separate walk-in run is the more extensible choice.
What mesh should a chicken run use?
Half-inch hardware cloth on the lower half, where ground predators reach, with ordinary poultry netting acceptable above. Hexagonal chicken wire alone does not stop raccoons or weasels.
