#ad Prices come from Amazon and change. How this site is funded. Scores are our own published rubric, not a lab test — see how we pick.

A coop advertised "for 4 chickens" is almost never sized for 4 chickens. Penn State Extension puts a large chicken at 2 sq ft of coop floor plus 10 sq ft of run, which means 4 standard hens want about 8 sq ft inside and 40 sq ft outside. Most manufacturers quote a bird count based on how many birds physically fit on the floor at night, which is a different and much smaller number.

So the first job on this page is arithmetic, not shopping. Find the coop's actual interior dimensions — not the overall length, which usually includes the run — multiply them, and divide by 8. If the answer is below 1, the coop is too small for 4 birds however the box is labeled. Where a listing does not publish interior dimensions at all, we say so in the spec table rather than guessing.

Four hens is the size most suburban backyards settle on: enough eggs for a household, few enough that the run stays grassy and the neighbors stay friendly. It is also the size at which coop listings become least reliable, because "4-6 chickens" is the most common claim in the category and a large share of those coops are really two-hen boxes.

The picks

Each one is either stated for four birds with credible dimensions, or comfortably over-sized.

Hatching Time

A double-wall structural-foam coop that assembles without tools and hoses out completely. The reason to pay plastic-coop money is mites: there is nowhere in the wall for them to hide.

AssemblySnap-together, no tools published
VentilationBuilt-in vents

What it does well

  • Non-porous double-wall plastic gives red mite nowhere to breed — the single biggest argument against wooden coops
  • Hoses out and dries in minutes instead of soaking into timber
  • Insulating foam wall is genuinely warmer in winter and cooler in summer than thin ply
  • Snap assembly means no half-day with a drill and a missing screw pack

Where it falls short

  • Several times the price of a wooden coop of the same stated capacity
  • Light enough that it must be anchored or weighted in wind
  • Four birds really is the limit — there is no expansion path

#2 · Four to six hens with a run already attached

Petsfit Outdoor Chicken Coop with Run (4-6 hens)

Petsfit

A coop-plus-run with three nest boxes stated for 4-6 birds. The attached run is the reason to buy it: most coops in this price band sell you a house and leave the enclosure to you.

ConstructionWood frame with wire run
Floor areaNot published by manufacturer

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • Three nest boxes comfortably covers six hens — they will all use one anyway
  • Attached run makes it usable the day it is built
  • Mid-price wooden coops in this size are the easiest to modify with hardware cloth

Where it falls short

  • Run wire on coops at this price is usually hexagonal netting, not hardware cloth — budget to re-skin it
  • No published floor area to verify the 4-6 claim
  • Six hens in the house plus this run is tight; fine if they free-range by day

Ketive 83-inch Chicken Coop with Run (4-6 hens)

Ketive

83 inches of coop-and-run for 4-6 birds. The published length is the useful number here: it is one of the few listings in this band that tells you the footprint before you buy.

Nesting boxYes, integrated

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • Published overall length, so you can mark it out on the lawn before ordering
  • Long, narrow footprint fits down the side of a house where square coops will not
  • Run and house in one purchase

Where it falls short

  • 83 inches total includes the run, so the house itself is small for six hens
  • No interior floor area published
  • Expect to replace the supplied mesh if anything larger than a rat visits your yard

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026

Aivituvin Mobile Chicken Coop with Wheels (2-4 hens)

Aivituvin

A wheeled, expandable coop-and-run for 2-4 birds. The wheels are the point: moving it weekly stops the ground underneath turning to bare mud, which is the usual fate of a fixed small run.

Published specifications
Stated capacity2-4 chickens
Nesting boxes2
MobilityWheels fitted
RunAttached, expandable
Floor areaNot published by manufacturer

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • Wheels mean you can rotate it and let grass recover — a real husbandry advantage, not a gimmick
  • Attached run means it works out of the box without building a second enclosure
  • Two nest boxes for up to four hens is correct, not padded
  • Expandable run section adds space without replacing the coop

Where it falls short

  • No floor-area figure published, so capacity has to be taken on trust
  • Wheeled coops are light by design, which also means easier for a determined raccoon to work at
  • An attached run on a mobile coop is rarely tall enough to stand in

New Age Pet ECOFLEX Fontana Jumbo Chicken Coop

New Age Pet

A recycled-composite coop that looks like painted timber and behaves like plastic: no rot, no splitting, no annual re-sealing. The sensible middle between a cheap wooden hutch and an Eglu.

Published specifications
MaterialECOFLEX recycled composite
FinishRed, wood-look
Rot resistanceNon-porous composite — will not rot or warp
Stated capacityNot published by manufacturer
Floor areaNot published by manufacturer

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • Composite board does not rot, warp or need painting — the three jobs wooden coops create
  • Looks like a timber coop, which matters if the coop sits where neighbors see it
  • Easier to disinfect than softwood, though not as seamless as a molded plastic shell

Where it falls short

  • No stated bird capacity or floor area on the listing — size it from the dimensions, not the name
  • Composite panels are heavy; plan where it goes before assembly
  • Mid-high price without the predator reputation of the Eglu

Four hens, four square feet of ground you will lose

A fixed run of 40 sq ft holding four hens will be bare earth within a season. That is not a failure of the coop; it is what four birds do to 40 sq ft. Your options are a mobile coop you move weekly, a deep-litter run topped up with wood chip, or accepting bare ground and managing the mud. University of Minnesota Extension's mobile poultry hut guidance is the clearest free explanation of why rotation works.

Nest boxes: two is correct, not four

Penn State Extension's rule is two nests for the first four hens. Coops advertising six nest boxes for four birds are not being generous, they are using the box count as a selling point. Four hens will queue for one favorite box regardless. Spare boxes are useful as storage, not as nests.

Frequently asked questions

How much space do 4 chickens need?
About 8 sq ft of coop floor and 32-40 sq ft of run, using Penn State Extension's 2 sq ft inside and 8-10 sq ft outside per large chicken.
How many nest boxes for 4 chickens?
Two. Penn State Extension recommends two nests for the first four hens, then one additional nest per four hens after that.
Will four hens destroy my lawn?
Within a fixed 40 sq ft run, yes, quite quickly. Move the coop regularly, top the run with wood chip, or plan for a bare run you rake and refresh.
Is a 4x4 coop big enough for 4 chickens?
A 4 ft x 4 ft coop is 16 sq ft of floor, which is double the 8 sq ft four large hens need. That is comfortable, and leaves room to add birds later.
