A coop advertised "for 12 chickens" is almost never sized for 12 chickens. Penn State Extension puts a large chicken at 2 sq ft of coop floor plus 10 sq ft of run, which means 12 standard hens want about 24 sq ft inside and 120 sq ft outside. Most manufacturers quote a bird count based on how many birds physically fit on the floor at night, which is a different and much smaller number.

So the first job on this page is arithmetic, not shopping. Find the coop's actual interior dimensions — not the overall length, which usually includes the run — multiply them, and divide by 24. If the answer is below 1, the coop is too small for 12 birds however the box is labeled. Where a listing does not publish interior dimensions at all, we say so in the spec table rather than guessing.

A dozen hens is where most backyard setups stop being a hobby purchase and start being an infrastructure decision. Twenty-four square feet of coop floor is a 4 x 6 ft building; 120 sq ft of run is a 10 x 12 ft enclosure. Very few flat-pack coops genuinely provide either, which is why half this list is large runs rather than houses.

The picks

The honest answer at twelve birds is usually a big run with a secure house inside it.

135.7in Extra Large Wooden Coop with Run (10-15 hens)

Nearly 136 inches of coop and run stated for 10-15 birds. At this scale the attached run is what you are paying for — building an equivalent enclosure yourself costs more in lumber alone.

What it does well

  • Published overall length makes the footprint checkable before you commit the space
  • Attached run at 15-bird scale saves a genuinely expensive DIY build
  • Wooden frame takes hardware cloth and a proper latch without any fuss

Where it falls short

  • No interior floor area; fifteen standard hens need about 60 sq ft of house
  • Very large flat-pack — plan a full day and a second pair of hands
  • Needs a level, well-drained base more than any smaller coop on this page

What it does well

  • Twelve-bird stated capacity at a mid-range price
  • Wooden frame is easy to reinforce and re-skin
  • Run included, so there is nothing else to buy to get started

Where it falls short

  • No dimensions or floor area published, which at a 12-bird claim is the figure that matters most
  • Assume hexagonal netting and budget for hardware cloth
  • Large wooden flat-packs need a level base and two people

GUTINNEEN 68in Mobile Coop (8-12 hens)

GUTINNEEN

A 68-inch wooden coop on large wheels with four nest boxes and four perches, stated for 8-12 birds. The published perch and box counts are the useful detail; take the upper bird count with caution.

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • Four nest boxes and four perches are both published — most listings state neither
  • Large wheels make a 12-bird coop movable, which is otherwise unheard of at this size
  • Four boxes is exactly right for twelve hens on the one-per-four rule

Where it falls short

  • 68 inches of length cannot hold twelve standard hens at 4 sq ft each — plan for eight
  • No interior floor area published
  • Wheels plus weight means it will need a hand to move on soft ground

Quictent 18 x 9 x 6.6ft Metal Coop Run with Hardware Cloth

Quictent

162 sq ft of galvanized walk-in run, and the only one in this group whose listing says hardware cloth rather than 'wire mesh'. That one word is the difference between a run that stops a raccoon and one that does not.

AccessWalk-in

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • Hardware cloth, stated outright — hexagonal chicken wire does not stop a raccoon and this is not that
  • 162 sq ft gives twenty hens ten sq ft of run each, which is genuinely generous
  • 6.6 ft of height means you walk in rather than crawl
  • Galvanized steel frame will not rot and does not need painting

Where it falls short

  • A run, not a coop: the birds still need a secure house inside it
  • Large footprint needs flat ground and a day to build
  • Open top unless you add a cover, so hawks are still a live risk

What it does well

  • 128 sq ft published, which is a large run for a mid-size flock
  • Comes with a cover, so hawks and rain are both addressed
  • By far the best run area per dollar in this group

Where it falls short

  • No mesh gauge or type published — assume it needs a hardware-cloth skirt at minimum
  • Thin-walled tube frames in this class bend under snow load
  • Needs flat ground over a 128 sq ft area

Extra Large Wooden Walk-in Hen House (8-12 hens)

Generic

A walk-in wooden coop with a removable tray, nest box and secure latch, stated for 8-12 birds. The cheapest honest route to a coop you can stand up in, with the usual caveat about the supplied mesh.

Published specifications
Stated capacity8-12 chickens

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • Walk-in access at a price where most coops make you kneel in the doorway
  • Removable tray and a latching door are the two features that actually get used daily
  • Wooden walk-ins are trivially easy to upgrade with hardware cloth and a better latch

Where it falls short

  • No floor area published, and twelve standard hens need roughly 48 sq ft
  • The 'secure latch' on budget coops is usually a hook-and-eye — raccoons defeat those
  • Thin panel stock; expect to add battens at the corners

Check the claim against the dimensions

The GUTINNEEN on this list is a good worked example. It publishes 68 inches of length, four nest boxes and four perches, and states 8-12 chickens. Four nest boxes is exactly right for twelve hens. But 68 inches of coop cannot provide 24 sq ft of floor at any plausible width, so the realistic capacity is nearer eight. We rank it anyway because the published detail is good and the build is sound — we just do not repeat the twelve-bird claim.

Twelve hens, in numbers

  • 24 sq ft of coop floor and 96-120 sq ft of run
  • 72 inches of roost — that is two 3-foot bars, not one
  • Four nest boxes
  • About 3 lb of feed a day, so a 50 lb bag lasts around two and a half weeks
  • Over half a gallon of water a day in cool weather, well over a gallon in heat

Frequently asked questions

How much space do 12 chickens need?
About 24 sq ft of coop floor and 96-120 sq ft of run, at Penn State Extension's 2 sq ft inside and 8-10 sq ft outside per large chicken.
How many nest boxes do 12 hens need?
Four, using the rule of two nests for the first four hens plus one per four after.
Are flat-pack coops sold for 12 chickens big enough?
Usually not. Check the interior dimensions against 24 sq ft. Most coops in that category provide closer to the right space for eight birds.
Should I buy a shed and convert it instead?
At twelve hens that is a genuinely sensible route: a 6 x 8 ft shed gives 48 sq ft, stands up straight, and takes hardware cloth and vents easily. It is often cheaper than a purpose-built coop of the same capacity.
