A walk-in coop or run is not a luxury item, it is a maintenance decision. The practical difference is that a coop you can stand in gets fully cleaned, fully inspected and fully repaired. One you reach into gets the near two feet cleaned and the far corner ignored until something goes wrong there.
What counts as walk-in
Six feet six inches of internal height clears most adults. Six feet is borderline. Anything under that is a stoop, which is better than kneeling but will not change your cleaning habits. The products on this page publish their heights, which is the main reason they are here — many "walk-in" coops do not.
The picks
Four metal runs and two wooden coops. Note which ones specify hardware cloth.

Quictent 18 x 9 x 6.6ft Metal Coop Run with Hardware Cloth
Quictent162 sq ft of galvanized walk-in run, and the only one in this group whose listing says hardware cloth rather than 'wire mesh'. That one word is the difference between a run that stops a raccoon and one that does not.
| Dimensions | 18 ft L x 9 ft W x 6.6 ft H |
|---|---|
| Floor area | 162 sq ft |
| Mesh | Hardware cloth |
| Frame | Galvanized steel |
| Access | Walk-in |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- Hardware cloth, stated outright — hexagonal chicken wire does not stop a raccoon and this is not that
- 162 sq ft gives twenty hens ten sq ft of run each, which is genuinely generous
- 6.6 ft of height means you walk in rather than crawl
- Galvanized steel frame will not rot and does not need painting
Where it falls short
- A run, not a coop: the birds still need a secure house inside it
- Large footprint needs flat ground and a day to build
- Open top unless you add a cover, so hawks are still a live risk

#2 · Eight to ten hens in a coop you can walk into

PawHut Large Wooden Chicken Coop, 83in x 73in x 73in
PawHutThe rare large coop that publishes all three dimensions: 83 x 73 x 73 inches for 8-10 hens. 73 inches of height is the number that matters — you can stand up inside it to clean.
| Stated capacity | 8-10 hens |
|---|---|
| Dimensions | 83 in L x 73 in W x 73 in H |
| Footprint | About 42 sq ft |
| Construction | Wood |
| Finish | Light brown |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- All three dimensions published, so the 8-10 claim is actually checkable — and it holds up
- 73 in internal height means cleaning standing up instead of on your knees
- About 42 sq ft of footprint covers ten standard hens at roughly 4 sq ft each
Where it falls short
- Large and heavy to assemble; two people and a free afternoon
- Supplied wire is unlikely to be hardware cloth — plan to re-skin the lower panels
- Needs a level base: a 42 sq ft timber frame on uneven ground will twist

CAMMOO Walk-in Chicken Run, 13.1 x 9.8 x 6.6ft
CAMMOO128 sq ft of walk-in run with a cover, at a price per square foot nothing else here matches. Check the mesh before you trust it with birds overnight.
| Dimensions | 13.1 x 9.8 x 6.6 ft |
|---|---|
| Floor area | About 128 sq ft |
| Cover | Included |
| Access | Walk-in |
| Mesh gauge | Not published by manufacturer |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- 128 sq ft published, which is a large run for a mid-size flock
- Comes with a cover, so hawks and rain are both addressed
- By far the best run area per dollar in this group
Where it falls short
- No mesh gauge or type published — assume it needs a hardware-cloth skirt at minimum
- Thin-walled tube frames in this class bend under snow load
- Needs flat ground over a 128 sq ft area

#4 · A square 100 sq ft run that fits most yards

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026
VAGGER 10 x 10 x 6.5ft Metal Chicken Run with Cover
VAGGERA hundred square feet of covered walk-in run in a square footprint, which fits more yards than a long narrow one. Straightforward, cheap, and sized for a ten-hen flock at ten sq ft each.
| Dimensions | 10 x 10 x 6.5 ft |
|---|---|
| Floor area | 100 sq ft |
| Cover | Included |
| Access | Walk-in |
| Mesh gauge | Not published by manufacturer |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- A clean 100 sq ft — the easiest number to plan a ten-hen flock around
- Square footprint fits awkward yards better than a long rectangle
- Cover included, so the run is hawk-proofed from day one
Where it falls short
- No mesh specification published
- Light frame; add bracing if you get real snow
- Still a run, not a secure overnight house

#5 · A small, cheap walk-in run with a spire roof

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026
VEVOR Metal Walk-in Chicken Run, 6.56ft square
VEVORA 6.56-foot cube of galvanized walk-in run with a spire roof and cover. Small, inexpensive, and the pitched roof sheds rain and snow instead of pooling it like a flat cover.
| Dimensions | 6.56 x 6.56 x 6.56 ft |
|---|---|
| Floor area | About 43 sq ft |
| Roof | Spire roof with cover |
| Frame | Metal |
| Access | Walk-in |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- All dimensions published — 43 sq ft, which is four hens at a generous ten sq ft each
- Spire roof sheds water and snow rather than collecting it
- Cheapest honest route to a walk-in run
Where it falls short
- Mesh type not specified, which usually means hexagonal netting
- 43 sq ft is a small run for anything beyond four or five birds
- A run only — the house inside still has to be predator-proof

#6 · Twelve hens on a tight budget

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026
Extra Large Wooden Walk-in Hen House (8-12 hens)
GenericA walk-in wooden coop with a removable tray, nest box and secure latch, stated for 8-12 birds. The cheapest honest route to a coop you can stand up in, with the usual caveat about the supplied mesh.
| Stated capacity | 8-12 chickens |
|---|---|
| Access | Walk-in |
| Cleaning | Removable tray |
| Security | Secure latch fitted |
| Floor area | Not published by manufacturer |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- Walk-in access at a price where most coops make you kneel in the doorway
- Removable tray and a latching door are the two features that actually get used daily
- Wooden walk-ins are trivially easy to upgrade with hardware cloth and a better latch
Where it falls short
- No floor area published, and twelve standard hens need roughly 48 sq ft
- The 'secure latch' on budget coops is usually a hook-and-eye — raccoons defeat those
- Thin panel stock; expect to add battens at the corners

Metal run or wooden coop?
Metal walk-in runs
Cheap per square foot, rot-proof, and quick to build. They are enclosures rather than houses: the birds still need a secure box to sleep in. The critical variable is the mesh. A run advertised with "wire mesh" is almost certainly hexagonal netting, which stops nothing that matters. One that says hardware cloth is a genuinely different product.
Wooden walk-in coops
More expensive per square foot but they are a complete solution: house, roost, nest boxes and standing height in one. They also take modification easily — adding hardware cloth, vents or a second roost to a wooden coop is a Saturday job.
Securing a walk-in run
- Skirt the perimeter. A 16-inch hardware cloth apron laid flat and pinned down stops digging better than burying mesh, and is far less work.
- Upgrade the lower 3 feet. Extension guidance recommends hardware cloth on the lower half and ordinary poultry netting above, since ground predators are the ones that reach through.
- Cover the top. An open-topped run is a hawk buffet. Netting is cheap relative to losing birds.
- Fix the door. Run doors are the weak point — add a gravity latch or a spring bolt rather than the supplied catch.
