About Chickens & Coops

An independent, reader-funded publisher covering backyard poultry gear — written for the person buying their first coop, not for the spec-sheet enthusiast.

Who writes this

Chickens & Coops is written and edited by Mike M., the hands-on owner behind Iron Mako Media. Mike keeps a backyard flock of his own, and he started this site after discovering how much poultry gear is sold on vague promises and how little of it is explained in plain English to someone buying their first coop. Every guide here is written for the person he was at the start: someone who just wants to know which one to buy, and why.

Every page carries his byline, and the Person markup in the page source names the same author — the visible page and the machine-readable page agree about who wrote it.

We are going to be unusually plain about what that byline does and does not mean. Mike is not a veterinarian, a poultry scientist, an extension agent or a certified anything, and we will never imply otherwise. There is no test lab behind this site, no team of specialists, and no years-of-experience claim we are not in a position to substantiate. Those credentials are easy to claim on the internet and trivially falsifiable, and a site that invents them has told you something important about itself on page one.

Why that matters in this niche specifically

It matters because the alternative is the norm here. When we researched the sites currently ranking for the queries this site covers, we found a page claiming eight months of hands-on testing with six Rhode Island Reds, written under a byline describing the author as a tech enthusiast and gamer. We found a crafts domain publishing poultry reviews under two invented job titles, with stock avatars for photographs and the same placeholder testimonial text repeated across different products.

We are not going to compete with that by claiming more. We are going to compete by being checkable: real published figures with named sources, a stated method, and a plain statement of what we have not done.

What we actually do

  • Cite published figures from authorities, not from each other. Space per bird, feed and water intake, incubation temperatures, nest box counts — these come from university extension services and from CDC and USDA, and every page names the source. We never cite a competitor’s roundup as evidence for a fact.
  • Do the arithmetic the listings avoid. Most coops are sold for roughly twice the flock they can actually house. Checking the stated dimensions against the published space requirement is the single most useful thing we do.
  • Pull live prices. Every price comes from a live Amazon data feed with the date it was verified, and expires on its own if the feed stops. We track 131 products that way.
  • Say when a figure is not published. Our spec tables print “Not published by manufacturer” rather than a plausible estimate. The gap is more useful than a guess.
  • Recommend buying nothing, where that is the answer. Most backyard flocks do not need a coop heater, and our coop heater section leads with that rather than with a product grid.

What we deliberately do not do

  • We do not run a product testing lab. We have not assembled and lived with every coop on this site. Where a page assesses a product on specifications, capacity maths and the pattern of verified owner reports, the card says exactly that.
  • We do not publish testimonials. Not one. We have no customers and therefore no reviews, and inventing them is the specific failure we are competing against.
  • We do not print a price we cannot verify. Where no live price resolves, the button reads “Check price on Amazon”.
  • We do not mark up our own scores as product reviews. The rubric scores you see are our editorial judgment and are visible on the page; they are deliberately never emitted as review-rating markup, because we are not in a position to rate these products that way.
  • We do not monetize health content. The Salmonella and bird flu pages carry no product links at all.

The site, in numbers

89 guides, rankings and comparisons across 8 sections, covering 131 products. Every page lists its sources at the bottom and carries a visible last-updated date.

How this is funded

Reader-funded, through affiliate links. When you buy through a link here we may earn a commission from the retailer, at no extra cost to you. That funding never decides a ranking: where the cheaper option is the right answer we say so, and where we think you should buy nothing we say that too. The full disclosure is here.

Corrections

If we have a figure wrong, tell us and we will check it against the source, fix it, and change the page’s updated date. Corrections get priority over everything else. contact@chickensandcoops.com, or use the contact form.
