Feeders & Feed
The best rat-proof chicken feeders
Rats are not attracted to chickens. They are attracted to the feed, and a closed lid is the only thing that stops them.

Nobody gets rats because they keep chickens. They get rats because they put a permanent, reliable food source in the garden and left it open at night. Fix the feed and the rats leave, because the reason to stay has gone.
Why every product here is a treadle feeder
A rat can reach into a feeding port, climb into a hanging pan, and gnaw through a plastic hopper. The only design it cannot defeat is a lid that stays shut unless something heavy is standing on a step. That is not a preference; it is the only mechanism in the category that constitutes a physical barrier.
Steel bodies matter for the same reason. A plastic hopper is a few nights' work for a determined rat; galvanized steel is not.
The picks
Ranked on the lid mechanism and the body material — the two things that decide this.
#1 · Stopping rats and wild birds outright

Grandpa's Feeders Automatic Chicken Feeder, 20 lb
Grandpa's FeedersThe treadle feeder everything else copies. The hen's weight on the step opens the lid; a rat is too light and a sparrow cannot work it at all. 20 lb is right for up to about six hens.
| Capacity | 20 lb |
|---|---|
| Mechanism | Treadle — bird weight opens the lid |

| Waste | No-waste design (manufacturer claim) |

What it does well
- A closed lid is the only feeder design that genuinely denies rodents and wild birds
- Keeps feed dry in rain, which no open hanging feeder does
- Eliminates the billing-out waste that makes chickens look like they eat twice what they do
- Hens learn the treadle in a day or two with the lid propped open
Where it falls short
- Several times the price of a hanging feeder of the same capacity
- Bantams and very young birds may be too light to open it reliably
- There is a training period, and it needs the lid propped during it

#2 · Ten or more hens, filled fortnightly

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026
Grandpa's Feeders Automatic Chicken Feeder, 40 lb
Grandpa's FeedersThe 40 lb version of the same treadle mechanism. For a flock of ten or more it halves the number of refills and still shuts rodents out completely.
| Capacity | 40 lb |
|---|---|
| Mechanism | Treadle — bird weight opens the lid |
| Rodent resistance | Rat and rodent proof (manufacturer claim) |
| Waste | No-waste design (manufacturer claim) |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- 40 lb is roughly two weeks for ten hens, so refills become fortnightly
- Same closed-lid rodent exclusion as the 20 lb model
- Deep hopper means less chance of the feed bridging and jamming
Where it falls short
- The most expensive feeder on this page
- 40 lb of feed sitting in a feeder in summer will go stale before a small flock finishes it
- Large enough that it needs a sheltered spot inside the run

#3 · Treadle performance at a third of the price

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026
VEVOR Automatic Treadle Feeder, 40 lb
VEVORA galvanized 40 lb rainproof treadle feeder with a lockable lid, at a fraction of the premium brands. The mechanism is cruder, but the principle — a closed lid rodents cannot open — is the same.
| Capacity | 40 lb |
|---|---|
| Mechanism | Treadle, rainproof |
| Lid | Lockable |
| Material | Galvanized steel |
| Waste | No-waste design (manufacturer claim) |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- Galvanized steel body, published — not plastic, so rodents cannot chew in
- Lockable lid stops a clever raccoon lifting it
- 40 lb capacity at roughly a third of the premium-brand price
- Rainproof, stated
Where it falls short
- Budget treadle mechanisms are stiffer, so the training period is longer
- Galvanized steel will rust at cut edges after a few seasons outdoors
- Heavier than plastic when full — about 40 lb of feed plus the feeder

#4 · A treadle feeder for a mid-size flock

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026
RentACoop Automatic Treadle Feeder, 25 lb
RentACoopA 25 lb treadle feeder — the capacity most backyard flocks actually want, sitting between the 20 and 40 lb options and priced below the 40.
| Capacity | 25 lb |
|---|---|
| Mechanism | Treadle |
| Rodent resistance | Rat proof (manufacturer claim) |
| Waste | No-waste design (manufacturer claim) |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- 25 lb hits the useful middle: about a week and a half for eight hens
- Treadle mechanism gives the same rodent exclusion as pricier models
- Keeps rain out of the feed
Where it falls short
- Still a significant premium over a hanging feeder
- Lighter breeds may struggle with the treadle at first
- Material and dimensions are not published on the listing

#5 · A treadle feeder for two or three hens

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026
XINYI Metal Treadle Feeder, 12 lb
XINYIA 12 lb metal treadle feeder with a weatherproof lid. The right capacity for a very small flock, where a 40 lb hopper would just let the feed go stale.
| Capacity | 12 lb |
|---|---|
| Mechanism | Treadle |
| Material | Metal |
| Lid | Weatherproof |
| Rodent resistance | Rodent proof (manufacturer claim) |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- 12 lb means a three-hen flock finishes the hopper before the feed stales
- Metal body, so nothing to chew through
- Cheapest route into treadle feeding
Where it falls short
- Light birds have the most trouble with treadles, and small flocks often mean bantams
- 12 lb needs refilling weekly even for three hens
- Small metal feeders dent easily in transit

A feeder alone will not do it
Rat-proofing is a system. Change one part and the population shrinks; change all of them and it goes.
- Close the feeder at source. A treadle feeder, or bring an open feeder in at dusk every single night without exception.
- Store feed in metal. A plastic tub is a rat feeder with a lid on it. A galvanized bin with a tight lid is not.
- Clear spilled feed. Rake under the feeder daily. Spilled feed is as attractive as the hopper.
- Remove water access. Rats need water as much as feed. An open waterer at ground level overnight helps them.
- Remove harborage. Woodpiles, pallet stacks and long grass against the coop are where they live, not where they eat.
Signs you have a problem already
- Feed disappearing faster than the flock can eat it — compare against roughly 0.25 lb per hen per day
- Droppings in the feed store or along the coop walls — rat droppings are much larger than mouse droppings
- Runs and tunnels along walls, under the coop, or through long grass
- Gnaw marks on plastic feeders, bins or coop timber
- Eggs disappearing, which is less common but does happen
The biosecurity case
Beyond cost and nuisance, rodents and wild birds move disease. USDA's Defend the Flock program notes that avian diseases spread through contaminated equipment, feed and water, and that wild birds can introduce disease to domestic flocks. A closed feeder is one of the simplest biosecurity measures available to a backyard keeper.
