A coop advertised "for 8 chickens" is almost never sized for 8 chickens. Penn State Extension puts a large chicken at 2 sq ft of coop floor plus 10 sq ft of run, which means 8 standard hens want about 16 sq ft inside and 80 sq ft outside. Most manufacturers quote a bird count based on how many birds physically fit on the floor at night, which is a different and much smaller number.

So the first job on this page is arithmetic, not shopping. Find the coop's actual interior dimensions — not the overall length, which usually includes the run — multiply them, and divide by 16. If the answer is below 1, the coop is too small for 8 birds however the box is labeled. Where a listing does not publish interior dimensions at all, we say so in the spec table rather than guessing.

Eight hens is the point where the coop stops being a box in the garden and starts being a small building. It is also where walk-in access changes from a nice-to-have to the thing that determines whether the coop gets cleaned properly — scraping 16 sq ft of floor through a hatch on your knees gets old very quickly.

The picks

Two walk-in wooden coops, two mobile coops, and the metal run that outperforms all of them on predator resistance.

PawHut Large Wooden Chicken Coop, 83in x 73in x 73in

PawHut

The rare large coop that publishes all three dimensions: 83 x 73 x 73 inches for 8-10 hens. 73 inches of height is the number that matters — you can stand up inside it to clean.

Published specifications
Stated capacity8-10 hens
Dimensions83 in L x 73 in W x 73 in H

What it does well

  • All three dimensions published, so the 8-10 claim is actually checkable — and it holds up
  • 73 in internal height means cleaning standing up instead of on your knees
  • About 42 sq ft of footprint covers ten standard hens at roughly 4 sq ft each

Where it falls short

  • Large and heavy to assemble; two people and a free afternoon
  • Supplied wire is unlikely to be hardware cloth — plan to re-skin the lower panels
  • Needs a level base: a 42 sq ft timber frame on uneven ground will twist

MEDEHOO Mobile Chicken Coop with Run (6-8 hens)

MEDEHOO

A mobile coop-and-run for 6-8 birds with a weatherproof asphalt roof rather than painted ply. The roof is why this one survives a third winter when cheaper wheeled coops do not.

Published specifications
Stated capacity6-8 chickens
RoofWeatherproof asphalt

RunAttached, large
Floor areaNot published by manufacturer

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • Asphalt roofing is the single best durability upgrade on a wooden coop and it is fitted here
  • Attached large run plus wheels is the combination that keeps ground healthy
  • Sized for a realistic backyard flock rather than two birds

Where it falls short

  • No interior floor area published
  • Asphalt adds weight on top, which makes the coop harder to move single-handed
  • Supplied mesh will still need upgrading for raccoon country

GUTINNEEN Chicken Coop on Wheels (6-8 hens)

GUTINNEEN

A 67-inch weatherproof wooden coop on wheels for 6-8 birds. At this size a mobile coop stops being a novelty and starts saving your lawn — but it needs two adults to move.

What it does well

  • Published length, so the footprint is checkable
  • Wheels at an eight-bird size are rare and genuinely useful for rotating ground
  • Weatherproof roof rather than bare ply is the right call in this price band

Where it falls short

  • No floor area published; eight standard hens need roughly 32 sq ft inside
  • Heavy enough that moving it is a two-person job
  • Wheels add ground clearance, which also means a gap a predator can work under

#4 · Twelve hens on a tight budget

Extra Large Wooden Walk-in Hen House (8-12 hens) from Generic
$199.99on Amazon

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026

Extra Large Wooden Walk-in Hen House (8-12 hens)

Generic

A walk-in wooden coop with a removable tray, nest box and secure latch, stated for 8-12 birds. The cheapest honest route to a coop you can stand up in, with the usual caveat about the supplied mesh.

Published specifications
Stated capacity8-12 chickens
AccessWalk-in
CleaningRemovable tray
SecuritySecure latch fitted
Floor areaNot published by manufacturer

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • Walk-in access at a price where most coops make you kneel in the doorway
  • Removable tray and a latching door are the two features that actually get used daily
  • Wooden walk-ins are trivially easy to upgrade with hardware cloth and a better latch

Where it falls short

  • No floor area published, and twelve standard hens need roughly 48 sq ft
  • The 'secure latch' on budget coops is usually a hook-and-eye — raccoons defeat those
  • Thin panel stock; expect to add battens at the corners

Quictent 18 x 9 x 6.6ft Metal Coop Run with Hardware Cloth

Quictent

162 sq ft of galvanized walk-in run, and the only one in this group whose listing says hardware cloth rather than 'wire mesh'. That one word is the difference between a run that stops a raccoon and one that does not.

Dimensions18 ft L x 9 ft W x 6.6 ft H
Floor area162 sq ft
MeshHardware cloth
FrameGalvanized steel
AccessWalk-in

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • Hardware cloth, stated outright — hexagonal chicken wire does not stop a raccoon and this is not that
  • 162 sq ft gives twenty hens ten sq ft of run each, which is genuinely generous
  • 6.6 ft of height means you walk in rather than crawl
  • Galvanized steel frame will not rot and does not need painting

Where it falls short

  • A run, not a coop: the birds still need a secure house inside it
  • Large footprint needs flat ground and a day to build
  • Open top unless you add a cover, so hawks are still a live risk

The walk-in argument

A coop you can stand up in gets cleaned more often, gets inspected more carefully, and lets you catch a sick bird without dismantling anything. The PawHut above publishes 73 inches of internal height, which is enough for most adults. A coop with a 36-inch door is a coop whose far corner never gets scraped.

Or: a secure house inside a big run

At eight birds, the best value is often not a single large coop. A compact, genuinely secure house inside a 100+ sq ft metal walk-in run gives more total space per dollar and is easier to make predator-proof, because you are securing a small structure rather than a large one. The Quictent run on this list is here for that reason — it is the only product in the group whose listing specifies hardware cloth.

Frequently asked questions

How much space do 8 chickens need?
About 16 sq ft of coop floor and 64-80 sq ft of run, at Penn State Extension's 2 sq ft inside and 8-10 sq ft outside per large chicken.
How many nest boxes for 8 chickens?
Three. Two nests cover the first four hens and one more covers the next four.
Do I need a walk-in coop for 8 hens?
Not strictly, but at 16 sq ft of floor the cleaning argument becomes strong. A coop you can stand in gets cleaned properly; one you reach into usually does not.
Is it cheaper to buy one big coop or a small coop plus a run?
Usually a small secure house inside a large metal run gives more space per dollar at this size, and it is easier to secure because you are predator-proofing a smaller structure.
