A coop advertised "for 10 chickens" is almost never sized for 10 chickens. Penn State Extension puts a large chicken at 2 sq ft of coop floor plus 10 sq ft of run, which means 10 standard hens want about 20 sq ft inside and 100 sq ft outside. Most manufacturers quote a bird count based on how many birds physically fit on the floor at night, which is a different and much smaller number.

So the first job on this page is arithmetic, not shopping. Find the coop's actual interior dimensions — not the overall length, which usually includes the run — multiply them, and divide by 20. If the answer is below 1, the coop is too small for 10 birds however the box is labeled. Where a listing does not publish interior dimensions at all, we say so in the spec table rather than guessing.

Ten hens produces real quantities of everything: eggs, manure, feed consumption and noise. It is also the size at which under-provisioning stops being a slow welfare problem and becomes a visible one — crowded flocks of ten pick feathers, and once that starts it is hard to stop.

The picks

Three coops sized for ten birds and three large runs to put a smaller house inside.

PawHut Large Wooden Chicken Coop, 83in x 73in x 73in

PawHut

The rare large coop that publishes all three dimensions: 83 x 73 x 73 inches for 8-10 hens. 73 inches of height is the number that matters — you can stand up inside it to clean.

Published specifications
Stated capacity8-10 hens
Dimensions83 in L x 73 in W x 73 in H
FootprintAbout 42 sq ft
ConstructionWood
FinishLight brown

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • All three dimensions published, so the 8-10 claim is actually checkable — and it holds up
  • 73 in internal height means cleaning standing up instead of on your knees
  • About 42 sq ft of footprint covers ten standard hens at roughly 4 sq ft each

Where it falls short

  • Large and heavy to assemble; two people and a free afternoon
  • Supplied wire is unlikely to be hardware cloth — plan to re-skin the lower panels
  • Needs a level base: a 42 sq ft timber frame on uneven ground will twist

Omitree Deluxe Large Wood Hen House (6-10 hens)

Omitree

A large wooden hen house stated for 6-10 birds with six nest boxes. Six boxes is more than ten hens need, which means you can convert two to storage and still be correct on the one-box-per-four-hens rule.

Published specifications

What it does well

  • Six nest boxes at this price is unusual and removes any chance of laying bottlenecks
  • Genuinely sized for a double-digit flock rather than a token three birds
  • Plain wooden construction is the easiest thing in the world to modify and repair

Where it falls short

  • No floor area published; ten standard hens want roughly 40 sq ft inside
  • No run included — budget for an enclosure
  • Large flat-pack wooden coops are the ones where a missing hardware pack ruins a Saturday

PetsCosset 116in Chicken Coop with Run (8-10 hens)

PetsCosset

A 116-inch coop-and-run stated for 8-10 birds. The attraction is that the house and the enclosure arrive together and match — no carpentry required.

What it does well

  • Published length lets you check the footprint against your yard
  • House plus run in one delivery, nothing to build from scratch
  • Sized for a realistic ten-hen backyard flock

Where it falls short

  • No interior floor area published — ten hens need about 40 sq ft of house
  • Attached runs on wooden coops are rarely walk-in height
  • Re-skinning the lower run panels in hardware cloth should be assumed

VAGGER 10 x 10 x 6.5ft Metal Chicken Run with Cover

VAGGER

A hundred square feet of covered walk-in run in a square footprint, which fits more yards than a long narrow one. Straightforward, cheap, and sized for a ten-hen flock at ten sq ft each.

Dimensions10 x 10 x 6.5 ft

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • A clean 100 sq ft — the easiest number to plan a ten-hen flock around
  • Square footprint fits awkward yards better than a long rectangle
  • Cover included, so the run is hawk-proofed from day one

Where it falls short

  • No mesh specification published
  • Light frame; add bracing if you get real snow
  • Still a run, not a secure overnight house

Quictent 18 x 9 x 6.6ft Metal Coop Run with Hardware Cloth

Quictent

162 sq ft of galvanized walk-in run, and the only one in this group whose listing says hardware cloth rather than 'wire mesh'. That one word is the difference between a run that stops a raccoon and one that does not.

Published specifications
Dimensions18 ft L x 9 ft W x 6.6 ft H
Floor area162 sq ft
MeshHardware cloth
FrameGalvanized steel
AccessWalk-in

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • Hardware cloth, stated outright — hexagonal chicken wire does not stop a raccoon and this is not that
  • 162 sq ft gives twenty hens ten sq ft of run each, which is genuinely generous
  • 6.6 ft of height means you walk in rather than crawl
  • Galvanized steel frame will not rot and does not need painting

Where it falls short

  • A run, not a coop: the birds still need a secure house inside it
  • Large footprint needs flat ground and a day to build
  • Open top unless you add a cover, so hawks are still a live risk

#6 · A big covered run without building one

COZIWOW 9ft Extra Large Coop with Full Waterproof Cover

COZIWOW

A nine-foot enclosure with a full waterproof cover. Read it as a large covered run with a shelter rather than a true 20-bird coop — but as a run, the full cover is what keeps winter mud under control.

Published specifications
Overall length9 ft
CoverFull waterproof cover
TypeLarge coop-and-run enclosure
Stated capacityNot published by manufacturer
Floor areaNot published by manufacturer

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • A full waterproof cover over the whole footprint is the single best mud-control feature a run can have
  • Nine feet of length is real space for a flock to spread out on a wet day
  • Covered runs also block hawks, which an open-topped run does not

Where it falls short

  • No stated bird capacity — size it from the footprint, not the marketing
  • Enclosure-grade mesh, not a predator-proof house: the sleeping quarters still need securing
  • Large covers catch wind; this needs anchoring properly

The feed storage problem nobody mentions

At 2.5 lb a day, ten hens eat a 50 lb bag of feed in about three weeks. That bag has to live somewhere rodent-proof, which in practice means a metal bin with a lid — a plastic tub is a rodent feeder with extra steps. Factor the bin into the budget alongside the coop.
