#ad Prices come from Amazon and change. How this site is funded. Scores are our own published rubric, not a lab test — see how we pick.

A coop advertised "for 20 chickens" is almost never sized for 20 chickens. Penn State Extension puts a large chicken at 2 sq ft of coop floor plus 10 sq ft of run, which means 20 standard hens want about 40 sq ft inside and 200 sq ft outside. Most manufacturers quote a bird count based on how many birds physically fit on the floor at night, which is a different and much smaller number.

So the first job on this page is arithmetic, not shopping. Find the coop's actual interior dimensions — not the overall length, which usually includes the run — multiply them, and divide by 40. If the answer is below 1, the coop is too small for 20 birds however the box is labeled. Where a listing does not publish interior dimensions at all, we say so in the spec table rather than guessing.

Twenty hens is beyond what the flat-pack coop market serves honestly. Forty square feet of coop floor is a 5 x 8 ft building, and 200 sq ft of run is a 10 x 20 ft enclosure. There are exactly two realistic routes: a shed-grade purpose-built coop, or a secure house inside a very large run.

The picks

One true 20-bird coop, and the large runs that make a smaller house work at this scale.

OverEZ Classic XL Chicken Coop

OverEZ

A US-made shed-grade coop rated for up to 20 birds. It is priced like a small outbuilding because that is what it is — and it is the only coop here whose stated capacity is backed by that kind of build.

What it does well

  • Built to outbuilding standards rather than flat-pack-hutch standards
  • The only coop on this page whose 20-bird rating is plausible from the construction alone
  • US-manufactured, which generally means available replacement panels years later
  • Will still be standing when every budget coop bought at the same time has been replaced twice

Where it falls short

  • Costs more than most backyard keepers will ever spend on a coop
  • No published floor area, which is frustrating at this price
  • Delivery and siting need planning — this is a building, not a parcel

135.7in Extra Large Wooden Coop with Run (10-15 hens)

Generic

Nearly 136 inches of coop and run stated for 10-15 birds. At this scale the attached run is what you are paying for — building an equivalent enclosure yourself costs more in lumber alone.

What it does well

  • Published overall length makes the footprint checkable before you commit the space
  • Attached run at 15-bird scale saves a genuinely expensive DIY build
  • Wooden frame takes hardware cloth and a proper latch without any fuss

Where it falls short

  • No interior floor area; fifteen standard hens need about 60 sq ft of house
  • Very large flat-pack — plan a full day and a second pair of hands
  • Needs a level, well-drained base more than any smaller coop on this page

Quictent 18 x 9 x 6.6ft Metal Coop Run with Hardware Cloth

Quictent

162 sq ft of galvanized walk-in run, and the only one in this group whose listing says hardware cloth rather than 'wire mesh'. That one word is the difference between a run that stops a raccoon and one that does not.

Dimensions18 ft L x 9 ft W x 6.6 ft H
Floor area162 sq ft
MeshHardware cloth
FrameGalvanized steel
AccessWalk-in

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • Hardware cloth, stated outright — hexagonal chicken wire does not stop a raccoon and this is not that
  • 162 sq ft gives twenty hens ten sq ft of run each, which is genuinely generous
  • 6.6 ft of height means you walk in rather than crawl
  • Galvanized steel frame will not rot and does not need painting

Where it falls short

  • A run, not a coop: the birds still need a secure house inside it
  • Large footprint needs flat ground and a day to build
  • Open top unless you add a cover, so hawks are still a live risk

COZIWOW 9ft Extra Large Coop with Full Waterproof Cover

COZIWOW

A nine-foot enclosure with a full waterproof cover. Read it as a large covered run with a shelter rather than a true 20-bird coop — but as a run, the full cover is what keeps winter mud under control.

Published specifications
Overall length9 ft
CoverFull waterproof cover
TypeLarge coop-and-run enclosure
Stated capacityNot published by manufacturer
Floor areaNot published by manufacturer

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • A full waterproof cover over the whole footprint is the single best mud-control feature a run can have
  • Nine feet of length is real space for a flock to spread out on a wet day
  • Covered runs also block hawks, which an open-topped run does not

Where it falls short

  • No stated bird capacity — size it from the footprint, not the marketing
  • Enclosure-grade mesh, not a predator-proof house: the sleeping quarters still need securing
  • Large covers catch wind; this needs anchoring properly

What it does well

  • 128 sq ft published, which is a large run for a mid-size flock
  • Comes with a cover, so hawks and rain are both addressed
  • By far the best run area per dollar in this group

Where it falls short

  • No mesh gauge or type published — assume it needs a hardware-cloth skirt at minimum
  • Thin-walled tube frames in this class bend under snow load
  • Needs flat ground over a 128 sq ft area

Route one: a shed-grade coop

The OverEZ Classic XL on this list is the only product here built to outbuilding standards and rated for twenty birds. It is priced accordingly. If you want one purchase that does the whole job and will still be standing in fifteen years, that is what it costs — and a comparable shed plus the labor to convert it is rarely cheaper.

Route two: a big run and a modest house

The cheaper route is a 160-200 sq ft walk-in run with a secure house inside it. It is easier to make predator-proof, because the house is small and the run can carry a hardware-cloth skirt. It also scales: adding run area later is a bolt-on rather than a replacement. The Quictent 18 x 9 ft run gives 162 sq ft and is the only product in this group whose listing specifies hardware cloth rather than unspecified mesh.

What twenty hens consume

WhatPer dayPer week
FeedAbout 5 lbAbout 35 lb
Water, cool weatherAbout 1 gallonAbout 7 gallons
Water, hot weatherAbout 2 gallonsAbout 14 gallons
Derived from Extension's figures of roughly 0.25 lb of feed and 6.4 fl oz of water per hen per day, with water doubling in hot weather.

Five pounds a day means a 50 lb bag every ten days. At that rate, feed storage, delivery and rodent control stop being afterthoughts — see keeping rats out of chicken feed.

Frequently asked questions

How big a coop do 20 chickens need?
About 40 sq ft of coop floor and 160-200 sq ft of run, using Penn State Extension's 2 sq ft and 8-10 sq ft per large chicken.
How many nest boxes for 20 hens?
Six, following the two-for-the-first-four-plus-one-per-four rule.
Is a shed better than a coop at this size?
Often, yes. A 6 x 8 or 8 x 10 ft shed gives the floor area outright, can be stood up in, and takes vents, roosts and hardware cloth easily. Budget for cutting proper ventilation — sheds are built airtight and chickens need airflow.
How much feed does a flock of 20 go through?
Roughly 5 lb a day, which is a 50 lb bag every ten days or so, based on Extension's 0.25 lb per hen per day.
