A nipple waterer is a small valve that releases water when a hen pecks it. Because the water never sits in an open vessel, nothing can get into it: no bedding, no droppings, no feathers, no algae growing in sunlight. For cleanliness, nothing else on this site comes close.

Horizontal, not vertical

This is the one specification that matters. Vertical nipples point down and drip — not much, but continuously, into the bedding directly below, which is exactly where you do not want water. Horizontal nipples mount in the side of a bucket or pipe and seal when released. Every kit on this page is horizontal, and if you find a vertical kit cheaper, that is why.

The kits

Ranked on fittings included, pack size and whether the design is genuinely leakproof.

Horizontal Chicken Nipple Kit, 15-Pack with PVC Tee Fittings

Generic

Fifteen horizontal nipples with half-inch PVC tees, which is enough to plumb a whole run. Horizontal nipples beat the vertical kind: they do not drip, so the bedding underneath stays dry.

Fittings1/2" PVC tees included

What it does well

  • Horizontal nipples do not drip the way vertical ones do, so litter stays dry
  • Tee fittings included means you can build a run of pipe, not just one bucket
  • Fifteen nipples covers a large flock with spares
  • Completely sealed water: nothing can foul it

Where it falls short

  • Hens have to learn nipples — keep the old waterer available for a week
  • The pipe freezes faster than a bulk reservoir, so this is a warm-season system
  • You supply the pipe, the reservoir and the labor

#2 · The cheapest way to try a nipple waterer

$9.98on Amazon

Horizontal Chicken Waterer Nipples, 12-Pack with Drill Bits

Generic

Twelve horizontal nipples with the matching drill bits. A dozen is more than a backyard bucket needs, which means spares — and the right bit included saves a trip.

Published specifications

IncludedDrill bits
TypeHorizontal side-mount nipples
MaterialPlastic

What it does well

  • The correct drill bit is included, which is the part people get wrong
  • Twelve nipples means you can fit four and keep eight spare
  • Horizontal design, so no drips into the bedding

Where it falls short

  • No fittings, so this is for a bucket rather than a piped run
  • Plastic threads strip if overtightened
  • Freezes in winter like any nipple system

What it does well

  • Lowest-cost sealed water system there is
  • A lidded bucket keeps light out, which slows algae more than any additive
  • Individual cups are replaceable for pennies

Where it falls short

  • Port count is not published on the listing
  • You have to drill the bucket squarely or it weeps
  • Freezes like any unheated system

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026

6.6 Gallon Heated Waterer with Stand and 8 Nipples

Generic

6.6 heated gallons feeding eight nipples, with four spares. Nipples plus heat is the combination that keeps water both clean and liquid — the only setup here that does both well.

Published specifications
Capacity6.6 gallon
Nipples8 fitted, 4 spare

What it does well

  • Sealed nipples mean nothing can foul 6.6 gallons of water
  • Largest heated capacity here — multiple days for a mid-size flock
  • Spare nipples included, which is the part that eventually fails
  • Stand included, so it sits at the right height out of the litter

Where it falls short

  • Wattage is not published; heating 6.6 gallons is not cheap whatever it draws
  • Heated nipples can still freeze at the tip in extreme cold
  • Full weight is around 55 lb of water — site it where it will stay

#5 · Cups large enough for chicks and full-grown hens

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026

Lil'Clucker Large Automatic Waterer Cups

Lil'Clucker

Larger-than-usual auto-fill cups, stated as suitable for chicks through to turkeys. Cup size matters: a tiny cup empties faster than the valve refills when a hen is really drinking.

Published specifications
TypeAutomatic water cups
SizeLarge cup
Suitable forChicks, ducks, geese, turkeys

Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.

What it does well

  • Large cup holds enough that a thirsty hen is not waiting for the valve
  • Shallow enough for chicks, which the deep nipple systems are not
  • Works for mixed poultry, not just hens

Where it falls short

  • Pack size is not published on the listing
  • Open cups collect bedding — more cleaning than closed nipples
  • Freezes first in cold weather

How many nipples

Flock sizeNipplesNote
2-4 hens2-3One bucket is plenty
6 hens3-4Spread them along one side
10 hens5-6Consider a pipe run rather than a single bucket
20 hens8-10A piped run with a header tank
Roughly one nipple per two hens. Kits usually ship 12-15, so you will have spares.

Building one

  1. Choose the vessel. A food-grade 5-gallon bucket with a lid is the standard. A lid is essential — it keeps light out, which is what controls algae.
  2. Drill with the supplied bit. The bit size matters; a hole a fraction too large weeps forever. Drill low on the side, not on the base.
  3. Seat the nipples hand-tight plus a little. Overtightening strips the plastic thread and causes the leak you were avoiding.
  4. Mount at back height. Hens drink with a slight upward reach; too low and they will not use it.
  5. Fill and watch for ten minutes before you trust it, then again after an hour.

Training the flock

Hens do not instinctively understand nipples. The method is simple and reliable: leave the old waterer in place but take it away during the day for a week, tap each nipple so a bead of water forms where they can see it, and let curiosity do the rest. Most flocks are converted within a few days. Watch for any bird that is not drinking — occasionally one does not get it, and in a mixed flock that bird needs an open dish.

Nipples versus cups

Cups are the obvious alternative: a small bowl that refills from a valve. They are easier for hens to learn and shallow enough for chicks, but the cup is open, so bedding gets in and it needs rinsing. Nipples are cleaner; cups are more intuitive. The full comparison is here.

Maintenance, which is minimal

  • Flick each nipple weekly to check it releases. Grit occasionally lodges in the valve.
  • Rinse the vessel weekly. Sealed is not sterile — biofilm still forms on the inside walls.
  • Replace a weeping nipple rather than tightening it further. They cost pennies and the thread is already stripped.
  • Drain completely before the first hard freeze if you are not running a heated system.

Frequently asked questions

Are chicken nipple waterers better than open waterers?
For cleanliness, clearly. The water is completely sealed, so nothing can foul it and algae cannot grow. The trade-offs are a short training period and much worse freeze resistance.
Horizontal or vertical chicken nipples?
Horizontal. Vertical nipples drip continuously into the bedding directly below, which causes wet litter and the ammonia that follows.
How many nipples do I need?
Roughly one per two hens. Six hens want three to four; twenty hens want eight to ten on a piped run.
How do you train chickens to use a nipple waterer?
Tap each nipple so a visible bead of water forms, and withdraw the old waterer during the day for about a week. Most flocks convert in a few days. Watch for any bird that is not drinking.
Do nipple waterers freeze?
Yes, before anything else — each nipple holds only a few drops exposed to the air. Heated nipple systems exist but a heated open drinker is more reliable in a hard winter.
