Nesting Boxes
The best nesting box pads
A nest pad does what loose shavings cannot: stay put under a hen and keep the egg off the hard floor.

A nest pad is a thin mat of wood wool or synthetic turf that sits in the bottom of a nest box. Its value is that it stays where it was put. Loose shavings get scratched out within days, and a hen laying on a bare box floor produces more cracked eggs than one laying on a cushioned surface.
What a nest pad has to do
- Cushion the egg at the moment it is laid, which is when most hairline cracks happen.
- Stay in place when a hen shuffles and turns, which loose bedding does not.
- Not compact flat, so it keeps cushioning for weeks rather than days.
- Fit the box. 13 x 13 inches is the de facto standard; pads that publish their dimensions drop straight in.
- Be thin enough for a roll-away box if that is what you have.
The three types
Excelsior / aspen pads — the standard
Shredded wood wool pressed into a mat. It springs back under a hen rather than compacting flat, which is the main advantage over shavings. Aspen has fewer aromatic oils than pine, which matters in a nest box right under a hen's face. Composts with the rest of the litter.
Washable synthetic turf pads — the reusable option
Artificial grass mats you rinse and put back. The economics flip after a year or so because the running cost after purchase is close to zero, and there is nothing organic for mites to live in. The catch is that they only work if you actually wash them — an unwashed synthetic pad is worse than fresh shavings.
Loose shavings — still fine, with caveats
Cheapest, and perfectly acceptable if you top them up often. They get scratched out, they do not cushion as well once compacted, and in a roll-away box they collect at the low end and block the roll.
The picks
Two excelsior options, the washable alternative, loose shavings, and nesting herbs.

Precision Pet Chicken Nesting Pads, 13x13in, 10-Pack
Precision Pet by PetmateTen 13 x 13 inch excelsior nest pads. Published dimensions matter here — 13 x 13 is the size most nest boxes are built around, so these drop straight in.
| Dimensions | 13 x 13 in |
|---|---|
| Pack | 10 pads |
| Material | Excelsior (wood wool) |
| Finish | Beige |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- 13 x 13 in is the de facto standard nest box size, so these fit without trimming
- Excelsior springs back under a hen instead of compacting flat like shavings
- Ten pads is a year of changes for three boxes
- Composts with the rest of the litter
Where it falls short
- More expensive per nest than a handful of shavings
- Excelsior still needs changing when it gets soiled; it is not permanent
- Loose strands can tangle around a chick's leg — use shavings in a brooder instead

MagJo Aspen Nesting Pads, 13x13in, 12-Pack

|---|---|
| Pack | 12 pads |
| Material | USA-grown aspen excelsior |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well

- Standard 13 x 13 in fit
- Twelve pads gives a longer run between orders
Where it falls short
- Premium price for a consumable
- Same soiling rate as any nest pad
- Loose fibers are not suitable for a brooder floor

#3 · Reusable pads you rinse instead of replace

Washable Artificial Grass Nesting Pads, 6-Pack
DenForsteSix washable artificial-grass nest pads. The economics flip after a year or so: a pad you hose off and put back costs nothing after the first purchase.
| Pack | 6 pads |
|---|---|
| Material | Washable artificial grass |
| Reusable | Yes |
| Dimensions | Not published by manufacturer |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- Washable, so the running cost after purchase is close to zero
- Artificial turf cushions eggs well and does not compact
- Nothing for mites to live in, unlike loose organic bedding
Where it falls short
- Dimensions are not published, so fit is a gamble on a non-standard box
- They need actually washing — a pad that is not cleaned is worse than fresh shavings
- Synthetic, so they do not compost with the rest of the litter

#4 · The default coop and nest-box bedding

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026
Small Pet Select Pine Shavings Chicken Bedding
Small Pet SelectKiln-dried pine shavings in a bag sized for a coop rather than a hamster cage. Pine is the baseline bedding for a reason: absorbent, cheap, compostable, and it does not mat.

|---|---|
| Intended use | Coop floor and nest boxes |
| Volume | Not published by manufacturer |
| Dust level | Not published by manufacturer |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- Absorbent enough to run a deep-litter floor for weeks between full changes
- Composts down with the manure into usable garden material
- Shavings stay loose, so hens can scratch and dust-bathe in them
Where it falls short
- Dustier than hemp, which matters in a tight coop with poor ventilation
- Volume per bag is not published, so cost-per-liter is hard to compare
- Blows out of an open-sided run

#5 · A nest box that smells better, honestly described

Eaton Pet and Pasture Premium Nesting Herbs
Eaton Pet and PastureA dried aromatic herb blend for nest boxes. It is a freshener, not a treatment: nice for the person collecting eggs, and there is no reliable evidence it does anything medicinal.
| Type | Dried aromatic herb blend |

| Use | Nesting boxes and coop |
| Weight | Not published by manufacturer |
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing, as published at the date above.
What it does well
- Genuinely makes a nest box pleasanter to reach into
- Dried herbs are harmless to hens
- A small handful per box goes a long way
Where it falls short
- Marketed with health claims that are not supported by published evidence — treat it as a freshener
- Weight is not published, so value is hard to judge
- Does nothing about mites, which is what people hope it does

| Roll-away box | Thin pad only | Must not stop the egg rolling |
How often to change them
When they are soiled, which for a well-run coop with the boxes mounted below the roost is every few weeks. If you are changing nest material weekly, the usual cause is hens sleeping in the boxes — which means the boxes are too high relative to the roost. Fix the height and the pads last much longer.
On nesting herbs
Dried herb blends for nest boxes are widely sold with health claims — mite repellence, respiratory benefit, laying stimulation. We have not found published evidence supporting those claims and we are not going to repeat them. What is true is that a handful of dried lavender and marigold makes a nest box considerably more pleasant to reach into, and dried herbs are harmless to hens. Buy it for that reason if you like it; do not buy it instead of treating mites.
A clean nest is a food-safety thing too
CDC's backyard poultry guidance notes that eggshells can become contaminated through poultry droppings or the nest environment, and recommends cleaning and refrigerating eggs after collection and discarding cracked ones. A clean nest pad is the cheapest way to reduce how much cleaning the eggs need — and washing eggs removes the protective cuticle, so it is better not to have to.
