Affiliate disclosure

Chickens & Coops is reader-funded through affiliate links. Here is exactly what that means and what it does not change.

Last updated: October 5, 2026

The short version

When you click a buy link on this site and purchase something, we may earn a commission from the retailer at no extra cost to you. You pay the same price you would pay going to the retailer directly. That commission is how this site is funded, and it is the only way it is funded — there are no ads, no sponsored posts, no paid placements and no gifted-product arrangements.

The Amazon Associates statement

Chickens & Coops is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

Which links earn

Every buy button, price link and product card on this site goes to a retailer we earn from. We do not send you to untracked destinations and then hope — if a link looks like a buy link, it is one, and it is disclosed as one.

Earning: Amazon.

Reference only, no commission: Brinsea, Harris Farms, Omlet, Premier 1 Supplies, KEBONNIXS, RentACoop, Rural King, Tractor Supply. These appear on the site only as cited sources for published specifications. Where we link to one, we are sending you to check a figure, not to buy — and we earn nothing if you do.

Buy links are marked rel="sponsored nofollow", open in a new tab, and carry an #ad label with a link back to this page. Every commercial page also carries a disclosure above its first buy button, not just in the footer.

What commission does not change

  • It does not decide rankings. Products are ranked against a published rubric. Where the cheaper option is the right answer, it wins, even where it pays less.
  • It does not stop us saying “buy nothing”. Our coop heater page leads with the fact that most backyard flocks should not buy one. That page would earn more if it did not.
  • It does not apply to health content. Our Salmonella, bird flu and fire safety pages carry no product links at all, by policy. Those pages earn nothing and that is the point.
  • It does not affect what we say about a product. Negative assessments, published specification gaps and “we would skip this” verdicts all appear on products we would earn from.
  • No manufacturer has any input into what appears here or what we say about it.

How prices work

Prices come from a live retailer data feed and carry the date they were verified — currently October 5, 2026. They expire automatically after 48 hours: if the refresh stops, every number on the site disappears and the buttons fall back to “Check price on Amazon”.

We never print a price we cannot verify. If you see a number here it came from the retailer within the last couple of days, and if you see “Check price” it means we would rather send you to look than show you something stale. Prices change constantly and the price you see at checkout is the one that counts.

Cookies and tracking

Clicking a buy link takes you through a redirect on this domain and then to the retailer, which sets its own cookie to attribute the referral. We do not receive your name, address, payment details or order contents — affiliate reporting shows aggregate commission, not who bought what. Our privacy policy covers this in more detail.

Why we are telling you this

Partly because the US Federal Trade Commission requires clear disclosure of material connections, and partly because a site whose funding is obvious is easier to judge than one whose funding is hidden. You should read every recommendation here knowing we earn when you buy — and then judge whether the reasoning stands up. How we pick sets out that reasoning, including what we have not done.
